Chelsea's Willy Caballero move proves one thing about Frank Lampard's summer transfer plans

One of the areas where Chelsea might have been looking this summer for a new player is in the goalkeeper position.

Kepa Arrizabalaga has had some poor moments over the course of the season, and he was replaced by back-up goalkeeper Willy Caballero.

Kepa eventually won his place back in the side and is expected to be the number one goalkeeper going into the 2020/21 campaign.

However, Caballero's future had been under some scrutiny, with the 38-year-old's contract coming to an end at the conclusion of this season.

But Caballero's deal with the Blues has been extended for another season, meaning that the Argentine is expected to be the back-up for one more campaign.

Chelsea had been linked with several goalkeepers as a potential back-up to Kepa, with Andre Onana, Dean Henderson, Nick Pope and Ben Foster having been candidates.

However, the decision to take up the option of Caballero has proved one thing about the upcoming summer transfer window.

Chelsea have made the same move with Olivier Giroud in the last few months, showing the potential trepidation about the upcoming market.

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has played havoc with the football calendar and it is expected to have a big impact on potential transfers.

There is no surprise that the world has taken an economic dip due to the pandemic, meaning clubs have also lost millions of pounds during the past few months.

After a summer transfer ban and also failing to bring in any new players in January, the Blues could have looked to spend some big money to back Frank Lampard.

However, the moves for Giroud and Caballero have shown that the Blues are preparing for less money to be spent over the summer months.

Bringing players in for big money could potentially not happen and extending Caballero is a sign that they are preparing for that possibility.

The Blues are also in discussion with Willian and Pedro over potentially extending their deals until the end of the current campaign, with their deals set to expire at the end of June.

Lampard also wants Willian to sign a new long-term deal, but the Blues are only willing to give him two years, not the three that is is after.
