Chelsea's Premier League advantage over Liverpool and Tottenham ahead of West Ham clash

Chelsea have seen two chances to go top of the Premier League table come and go.

The Blues travelled to Goodison Park last weekend knowing victory would have seen them climb above Liverpool as well as Tottenham Hotspur, albeit for less than 24 hours.

However, Frank Lampard's side were beaten 1-0 thanks to Gylfi Sigurdsson's first-half penalty in what was their first league defeat since the second week of the season - against Liverpool.

But the damage wasn't too severe with the Reds and Spurs being held to 1-1 draws away at Fulham and Crystal Palace which meant Chelsea didn't lose too much ground in the title race.

Wolves 2-1 Chelsea: Frank Lampard press conference

Three days later, the Blues had another chance to lead the table when they kicked off gameweek 13 with a trip to the Midlands to face Wolves.

And once again, they failed. Despite Olivier Giroud's opener, goals from Daniel Podence and Pedro Neto completed the turnaround and inflicted back-to-back defeats on Lampard's side.

It could get worse for the west London outfit as they will drop to seventh if Manchester United beat Sheffield United on Thursday night.

With that said, the tables will turn ahead of the next round of fixtures and that could benefit Chelsea.

Back in action next Monday night when they welcome London rivals West Ham United, the Blues will have had six days of rest heading into the game.

Along with Wolves - also in action on the same day - it's the longest break between games for any Premier League club.

Considering the festive period is fast approaching, the six-day rest is very much an advantage for Chelsea as they look to return to winning ways.

Interestingly, Lampard did admit that tiredness was creeping into his squad following successive away games.

"There could be some fatigue," Lampard said in his post-Wolves press conference. "I hate to say it after a defeat because it could sound like an excuse but even the first 60 minutes when we were the better team we didn't have a zip about us.

"We have travelled up to Everton, come back and up to Wolves but everyone is in the same boat on that front."

Below is how many days of rest the current top seven in the Premier League have between gameweek 13 and 14.

Liverpool - 3 days

Tottenham - 4 days

Southampton - 3 days

Leicester City - 4 days

Everton - 3 days

Chelsea - 6 days

West Ham - 5 days
