Chelsea's newest signing tipped to become 'world's best' as reigning champs build for future

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Alejandra Bernabe from Atlético Madrid, with the 21-year-old Spaniard tipped to become “one of the best attacking full-backs in the world”.

The reigning champions have been bullish in the transfer window since the end of the season and have put pen to paper on another addition to bolster their squad as they look to further entrench their domestic dominance.

Bernabe joins the Blues from Atletico Madrid on a three-year deal and is set to return to her native Spain for the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Real Sociedad, where the Spain international spent the previous campaign, to continue her development.

The full-back is known for her attacking vim, wicked left foot and commitment to professionalism. She has racked up more than 75 senior appearances in her career to date, notably winning the 2021 Spanish Super Cup during her time with Atletico. Bernabe also brings valuable European experience, having featured in the UEFA Women’s Champions League for both Atletico and Sociedad.

Reflecting on the signing, manager Emma Hayes told the club's website: “Alejandra has a fantastic left foot and it’s very difficult to find players of her ability who can progress the ball up the pitch on the dribble. We know she can become a top left-sided player in the future and we’re excited to watch her develop and grow.”

General manager Paul Green added: “We believe Alejandra has the potential to be one of the best attacking full-backs in the world. Her attacking play will be a real asset for the team in the future.”

Bernabe is the latest addition to Chelsea’s ranks, behind USWNT international Catarina Macario and German midfielder Sjoeke Nusken. Chelsea claimed an unprecedented fourth WSL title on the trot as they defeated Reading 3-0 on the final day of the season.

Despite the consistent domestic success, European triumph continues to evade Hayes and co. Chelsea reached the semi-final stages of last year’s Champions League, before falling to defeat by eventual winners Barcelona.
