Chelsea's Magdalena Eriksson ready to thwart England in World Cup third-place playoff

Chelsea defender Magdalena Eriksson is looking to end Sweden's World Cup campaign with victory over England in Nice, as the two European nations clash in a third-place playoff.

An extra-time goal from new Manchester United signing Jackie Groenen condemned Sweden to defeat in last night's semi-final, which sets up a clash with Phil Neville's side after their loss on Tuesday to the United States.

Both nations have secured a spot in next summer's women's football tournament at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo but the focus for now lies solely on the clash in Nice, where Eriksson is eyeing a victory.

"We knew that we were gonna have two games left, whatever result tonight. And going for it on Saturday is gonna be massive and important for us and I feel like we have a good chance of beating England and that’s the goal from now on," she said after the match.

"We know we’re really good on the counterattack and the Netherlands didn’t give us any space because they stayed at home with their whole backline. So hopefully against England we can get more space to counter."

Coming up against England will see Eriksson face off against a number of her Chelsea teammates, while her side will also have a difficult test keeping the Lionesses' attack quiet.

New Manchester City forward Ellen White is chasing the golden boot after scoring six goals so far this summer but Eriksson is aware that the 30-year-old is not the only threat in the match.

"They have lots of good players. I’ve played against them and I’ve played with them a lot of times so I know them really well and they have a really good attacking team.

"I think there’s loads of players I could mention, so we just need to analyse them and see where they have their threats and then regroup, recover for Saturday."
