Chelsea's Kai Havertz transfer talks set to make Bayer Leverkusen star history maker

Kai Havertz will become the most expensive German player of all time should he complete his move from Bayer Leverkusen to Chelsea.

The two clubs have been in negotiations since the middle of last week as they look to put a package together.

Havertz has told Leverkusen that he wants to leave and has asked them to honour his wish following a stellar season in Germany.

Chelsea have been the club most actively pursuing him and could finally land their man, reports Sport BILD.

Havertz scored 18 times for a Leverkusen team that made the last eight of the Europa League and finished fifth in the Bundesliga.

His club maintain though that he will only depart the BayArena if an appropriate deal is struck.

“No decision has been made yet,” sporting director Rudi Voller told Kicker. “I’d like to repeat myself by emphasising that we're talking about a wonderful footballer.

“We have a clear and mutual agreement with him and his representatives that he can only leave under certain conditions.

Who do Chelsea need to sign this summer? Have your say below

“There is nothing new in this regard. Otherwise he will stay.”

The Blues were unable to add any players last summer as Frank Lampard took charge at Stamford Bridge.

That was made all the more frustrating after Eden Hazard left for Real Madrid with Chelsea unable to sign a replacement.

But they have wasted no time in recruiting players this summer with both Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech arriving.

The former was another of the Bundesliga's impressive performers last term.

Between them the two players have set Chelsea back over £100m and Havertz will add to their summer expenditure should he make the move.
