José Mourinho has failed with an appeal against his suspended stadium ban and £50,000 fine for comments made after Chelsea’s match against Southampton, the Football Association has announced.
The Portuguese said referees are “afraid to give decisions to Chelsea” after his side’s 3-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge.
An FA statement read: “An Appeal Board has dismissed the appeal from Chelsea manager José Mourinho in relation to a decision made by an Independent Regulatory Commission.”
Mourinho pleaded guilty to a Football Association charge of misconduct after making the remarks, but then appealed against the severity of the sentence. He was furious that Robert Madley did not award a penalty when Maarten Stekelenburg darted off his line and made contact with Radamel Falcao in the box.
The FA said that Mourinho’s ban would be immediately invoked should he be found guilty before 13 October 2016 of another breach of its rules relating to comments made to or through the media.
Mourinho is also appealing against the one-match stadium ban for approaching Jon Moss at half-time in the defeat by West Ham.
