Chelsea's hopes of signing Edinson Cavani dealt fresh blow ahead of summer transfer window

Edinson Cavani will have his pick of “many clubs” when he becomes a free agent at the end of the season, according to his mother.

Cavani has been linked with a move to Chelsea in the past, most recently in January, but his mother has hinted at a move to Atletico Madrid once his contract at French champions PSG is up.

There was speculation that Cavani was close to a move to Atletico in the January transfer window, as PSG wanted to cash in on their striker.

But now his mother, Berta Gomez, has told Ovacion Digital that the 33-year-old intends to head to La Liga in the summer.

The latest on Chelsea's out of contract stars

“Fortunately today, there are many clubs interested in signing Cavani," she said. "He still does not know where he will play, he has three months left in Paris.

“We have to think carefully. At the moment, he has no intention of returning to Uruguay, he is planning to continue in Europe and would like to go to Spain.”

The move to Atletico broke down in January, and club president Enrique Cerezo blamed some of Cavani’s family members for the collapse of the signing.

However, Gomez responded to that claim, as reported by, Goal saying: “It is not impossible that Edinson could go to Atletico Madrid in the summer, as long as the president rectifies what he said.

“The president of Atletico must apologise. We are not spiteful and everything can be fixed and if he retracts what he said.

“My son is going to have offers, it is unquestionable because he is a proven forward, as he has shown in all these years.

“But he keeps thinking about being able to go to Atletico because he would like to play under Cholo (Diego Simeone).”

Cavani has been in and out of the team in Paris this season, playing just 14 times for PSG, scoring four goals in those games in Ligue 1.
