Chelsea's fresh big-money Romelu Lukaku transfer offer after Roman Abramovich intervention

Chelsea are set to make a fresh attempt to lure Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge.

The Inter Milan star spent three years in London with the Blues back in 2011 but spent the majority of his time out on loan.

The Belgian starred for West Brom and Everton in temporary spells before sealing a permanent switch to Merseyside in a £28m deal.

Since then, Lukaku has gone on to star with Milan after leaving Manchester United - and his resurgent form in Italy has alerted his old club.

Blues owner Roman Abramovich is a big fan of the 28-year-old striker and has now made a fresh play for his signature.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Abramovich has sent his son out to Italy to try and persuade Lukaku to return to London.

Abramovich Jr is currently in Milan on a business trip, with the main aim believed to be sealing a deal for the Inter star.

Chelsea are known to be in the market for a striker this season after last year’s £53m signing Timo Werner flopped in his debut season.

The German scored just six goals in 35 Premier League games.

Despite the Blues' well-documented interest in Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland, Abramovich senior is personally driving the move to bring Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge.

But, as with their pursuit of Haaland, a switch isn’t set to be straightforward for Chelsea.

Lukaku notched 24 goals in Serie A last year as Inter won the Scudetto for the first time in over a decade – and the Belgian is happy with life on and off the pitch in Italy.

Abramovich is hopeful that sending his son to Milan to negotiate a return will help to soften that stance.

A deal for Lukaku won’t be cheap, but reports suggest that Chelsea are willing to offer a whopping £110m to get their man.

A bid that size would certainly get Milan’s attention in the current climate.

Chelsea know they need more goals to build on May's Champions League win, with ambitions to mount a title challenge next year.

The Blues finished fourth, but midfielder Jorginho finished as top scorer with just seven goals.

Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham and Werner all finished behind him with six.

"We need more goals and we rely on anybody and we want to trust anybody who is capable of scoring," boss Thomas Tuchel said back in April, hinting at his summer transfer plans.

"But you just need to read the numbers, our top scorers have six goals. This is clearly not enough for the demands, the expectations and the targets Chelsea football club has and what we demand.

"I say this without any anger and without being rude to any of the offensive guys, I think they're very well aware of it.”
