Chelsea's forgotten man makes return to training after long injury lay-off

Davide Zappacosta is stepping up his recovery from the anterior cruciate ligament injury he sustained at the beginning of October after taking part in a training session at Roma yesterday.

The Roma players are working out individually at the club's Trigoria campus with social distancing measures still in place across Italy.

But the on loan Chelsea right back has recovered from knee surgery sufficiently to take part in some drills alone as Paulo Fonseca's side prepare for the eventual return of Serie A.

Dominic Raab says the government has been discussing restarting sport behind closed doors

Zappacosta joined Roma on a six-month loan in late August that was extended to the end of the season despite his injury.

He is under contract at Chelsea until 2022 having signed a 12-month extension before heading back to Italy but he is not likely to be part of Frank Lampard's first-team plans going forward.

The Italy international joined Chelsea from Torino on a four-year deal for £23million in 2017.

After making 22 Premier League appearances in his first season under Antonio Conte he only played four times for Maurizio Sarri.

He featured in pre-season under Lampard but was only named on the bench in the Super Cup defeat to Liverpool.

Reece James's subsequent emergence along with Cesar Azpilicueta starting the campaign as first choice knocked him further down the pecking order.

Zappacosta would likely be sold in the next transfer window should Chelsea receive an offer that meets their expectations.

He is one of almost 30 players that the club has had on loan this season.
