Chelsea's Edouard Mendy breaks his silence after injury blow and delivers update on return date

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has allayed fears that he could be out of action for an extended period.

The 28-year-old suffered a thigh injury during training whilst on international duty with Senegal, thus causing him to miss their 3-1 loss against Hakim Ziyech's Morocco on Friday evening.

In fact, Mendy has returned to Cobham to undergo further tests.

Chelsea's Champions League inclusions and omissions

As reported by football.london, the £22m summer signing from Rennes is now expected to miss the Blues' next Premier League clash against Southampton after the international break.

The Saints are the visitors to Stamford Bridge on October 17, but barring a speedy recovery, Mendy is likely to be out of action for at least 10 days, thus ruling him out of next weekend's game.

With that said, Mendy is in good spirits despite the injury setback and has taken to social media to provide an update for head coach Frank Lampard and Chelsea fans.

"Little hitch, I'm going to do everything I can to come back faster and stronger," he wrote on Instagram.

"Thank you all for your messages."

Mendy is expected to be back for the opening Champions League game of the season against Sevilla on October 20.

But as for the home game against the Saints, with either Willy Caballero or Kepa Arrizabalaga will come back into the team.

The latter hasn't played for the Blues since the 2-0 loss at home to Liverpool last month, but did keep a clean sheet for Spain against Portugal a few days ago and had a message for Lampard.

"I've felt confidence, at ease [with the national side]," he told reporters.

"I think it was a good game and I'm happy with the confidence of the coach.

"When I'm needed to help on the pitch, I try to do the best possible. It was a game of great intensity.
