The Chelsea striker Diego Costa has been left out of Vicente Del Bosque’s Spain squad for the friendlies against Italy and Romania.

Costa, who has scored only once for Spain in 10 appearances, has been replaced in the squad by Athletic Bilbao’s Aritz Aduriz. The 35-year-old’s one and only previous appearance for the national team came during a Euro 2012 qualifier against Lithuania in 2010.

“It was a medical issue by the Spanish coaches and medical team,” said Chelsea’s manager, Guus Hiddink, on Friday.

Real Madrid’s Nacho makes the cut, as does Barcelona’s Sergi Roberto.

Spain squad Casillas (Porto), De Gea (Manchester United), Rico (Sevilla); Juanfran (Atlético Madrid), Mario (Villarreal), Pique, Bartra (Barcelona), Ramos, Nacho (Real Madrid), Alba (Barcelona), Azpilicueta (Chelsea), Busquets (Barcelona), San Jose (Athletic Bilbao), Sergi (Barcelona), Cesc (Barcelona), Koke (Atlético Madrid), Thiago (Bayern Munich), Isco (Real Madrid), Silva (Manchester City), Mata (Manchester United), Alcacer (Valencia), Morata (Juventus), Aduriz (Athletic Bilbao), Nolito (Celta Vigo), Pedro (Chelsea)
