Chelsea's Conor Gallagher to join Swansea City on loan for rest of campaign

Chelsea youngster Conor Gallagher is set to join Swansea City on loan for the rest of the season.

The 19-year-old spent the first half of this campaign with Charlton Athletic, however was recalled by the Blues.

Last year’s Academy Player of the Year will now see out the rest of the 2019/20 Championship season with the Swans.

Steve Cooper’s team are on the hunt for promotion, sitting seventh in the table and just outside the play-off places, and the Welsh team have already looked to Chelsea to boost their squad.

Marc Guehi has signed an 18-month loan deal from the Blues, while Chelsea academy product Rhian Brewster has also moved to the Liberty Stadium from Liverpool on loan.

There was plenty of interest in Gallagher this month, including from Premier League sides.

Burnley and Norwich City were keen to seal permanent deals for the youngster, or with a loan with an option to buy, but Chelsea did not want to sell.

Rangers were another club linked with the midfielder, however Gallagher and the Blues have decided to stick it out in the Championship.

Gallagher had an excellent spell with Charlton, being a key part of Lee Bowyer’s team over the past few months.

He made 26 league appearances for the Addicks, 25 of those being starts, while he netted six goals and added two assists.

Swans boss, Cooper, meanwhile was the England U17 head coach when they won the World Cup in 2017, a squad that included Gallagher, Guehi and Brewster.

However, the youngster returned to the Blues and trained on Tuesday morning with the first team ahead of his switch to Swansea.
