Chelsea's Cesar Azpilicueta puts forward VAR solution after controversial Watford penalty call

Cesar Azpilicueta has called on Premier League referees to use VAR to its full capacity after Chelsea were left fuming by the decision to award Watford a penalty in Saturday evening's 2-1 win at Vicarage Road.

The captain believes that referees need to use the pitchside monitor rather than rely solely on the interpretation of the video assistant at Stockley Park.

He also feels that the clear and obvious rule is not being applied correctly.

"We have a lot of meetings about the VAR," the Chelsea captain said. "There is a screen on the pitch for the ref to look and see why he made the decision not to whistle for a penalty.

"We are not using the system in the right way, which is something to help the referees make the right decision. They are human, the same as players.

"We make mistakes but why not use the whole system in the right way? That's my big point in this case and in other cases that we have seen. It could help."

Referee Anthony Taylor had initially not awarded the spot kick for Jorginho's perceived trip on Gerard Deulofeu and it took more than two minutes for his decision to be overturned - indicating that it was not clear and obvious.

At a meeting on Thursday, Frank Lampard said that Premier League managers were told that on-field calls would only be reversed if it was undoubtedly the wrong decision.

"It is sometimes difficult to understand," Azpilicueta added before referring to his goal disallowed for offside against Liverpool in September. "I felt that in my own self when I had a goal ruled out from the VAR after 10 seconds, which is very disappointing.

"But when we have to say the VAR has to help the referee when it is a clear and obvious mistake it should be straight away. Why not instead of being in the middle of the pitch he could go to the touchline and see as many replays that he needs to see because it is a big decision and it's worth it to spend one extra minute to make the right decision."

Azpilicueta is also offering to assist the Premier League and referees to improve how VAR is implemented. "We had meetings and sometimes I'm happy to help when they need to," he added. "My biggest disappointment is we're not using the full system in the right way when we could do it and spend the same amount of time."

However, the right back did feel that Chelsea should have put the game beyond doubt before that contentious incident - only for Watford's goalkeeper Ben Foster to produce a series of stunning saves to deny Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic.

"We dominated," he said. "It was our fault not to score more goals. We had the chance to score and be more clinical. We know that especially in the Premier League when you are 2-0 up you have to suffer until the end. It's one for us to be more clinical and close games out."
