Chelsea's Cesar Azpilicueta follows in Mesut Ozil and Gareth Bale's footsteps with bold new plan

It is a long way off the days when footballers' investment for later life was to buy a pub but Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta is the latest Premier League player to invest in his own esports team.

Following down the path of Arsenal's Mesut Ozil, Leicester's Christian Fuchs and former Spurs star Gareth Bale, the Blues skipper is pumping money into Fifa team Falcons.

And in an interview with ESPN to explain his decision to invest, the versatile defender detailed the similarities between virtual football and the real deal - from performance levels to game plans and expectations of success and his players referring to him as "boss".

Falcons has been set up with Jose Antonio Cacho and Jesus Rincon, both Spanish gamers with huge audiences on YouTube, and they have gone on to recruit three other players.

"We have a great structure where there are people working behind the scenes on everything, so that our players feel like they have people working for them, too," said the Chelsea captain, who has this week returned to phase one training at Cobham.

"There is a manager, people working on social media, on Twitch, on content. It is far more than just having a player sitting behind a TV trying to win a game."

Azpilicueta says core values have already been introduced for the team and if one of his players takes the lead he expects them to continue attacking.

"They are very important: the humility, the ambition and respect, even in tough times," he added.

"When a game is not going your way, that is when you see the real people. It is non-negotiable. You need to be very disciplined, not in like a military way, but I want people that are going to improve and will work hard."
