Former Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has claimed that Hakim Ziyech should have signed for Spurs instead of Chelsea.
The Moroccan playmaker arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer in a deal worth £33million from Ajax. He was part of a huge summer splurge under former boss Frank Lampard that saw the likes of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Edouard Mendy and Ben Chilwell all arrive in west London.
Whilst a vast number of those signings have gone on to establish themselves within the Chelsea first team, Ziyech has struggled for consistency.
He has made just 28 starts in all competitions since then due to a combination of fitness issues and stuttering form, whilst he has also only managed to score seven goals and make four assists - a huge decrease on the productivity he displayed in his final season with Ajax.
It was reported earlier this summer that AC Milan could potentially make a move for the 28-year-old as they attempted to sign a replacement for Hakan Calhanolgu. In the end, a move failed to come to fruition, with Ziyech staying at Chelsea.
Now, former Tottenham and Ajax midfielder Van der Vaart has claimed that Ziyech should have signed for Spurs instead of Chelsea in an attempt to better his fortunes.
Talking to Ziggo Sport, he said: “With hindsight, it’s easy, but I think it was a wrong choice.
“I hope he still fully blossoms, but if he had gone to Tottenham, for example. They are lacking a player like him. He played very well at Ajax and did the same against Tottenham. Just take him then.
“With a player like that, Tottenham are title contenders, and they’re not now because they have all the same kind of players.
“It was a pity he went to Chelsea.”
Ziyech still has just under four years left on the contract he originally signed when joining Chelsea.
