Chelsea return 800 tickets for Champions League final vs Man City

Chelsea have returned over 800 unsold tickets for the all-English Champions League showdown with Manchester City on Saturday night.

In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, supporters have been forced to watch the majority of this season from the comfort of their own homes.

However, following the easing of Government restrictions, there is light at the end of the tunnel in that respect.

Ever-changing conditions caused by the pandemic mean the Champions League final - which was initially set to be held in Turkish city Istanbul - will now be played at the 50,000-capacity Dragao Stadium on Saturday night (8pm).

As far as City are concerned, it presents Pep Guardiola and his squad with a chance to add to the Premier League and League Cup trophies they have already won this campaign.

Chelsea are, meanwhile, preparing to board the flight to Portugal having sealed a top-four spot on the final day of the Premier League season.

Similarly to City, Chelsea were allocated 5,800 tickets by UEFA for the Champions League final.

Such was the demand to form part of the 16,500-strong crowd, around 2,800 passes were sold with independent travel - though the 800 that haven't been snapped up by Chelsea supporters were part of a charter package which included subsidised flights costing £200.

UEFA has been criticised for its pricing policy, with tickets ranging between €70 (£60.50) and €400 (£346).

However, due to serious financial complications brought about by Covid-19, the governing body is facing a number of challenges from this point on. Indeed, it's estimated that UEFA's pre-pandemic reserves, which are worth around €500million (£432.64million), will subsequently decrease to €100million (£86.53million) by 2023.

It's thought that is a direct result of the costs incurred by delaying Euro 2020 for 12 months, rebates to broadcasters and sponsors, plus the costs accrued by extensive Covid-19 testing and other such protocols.
