Chelsea receive update in Gianluigi Donnarumma pursuit as Real Madrid handed double injury boost

Here's all the news from around Stamford Bridge over the past 24 hours.

Blues get Donnarumma update

According to Calciomercato, via the Mirror, reported Chelsea target Gianluigi Donnarumma is set to leave AC Milan in the summer.

Donnarumma sees his contract at the San Siro come to an end once the season concludes and it seems that a new deal has not yet been agreed with the Italian club.

The Blues have been linked with a move for the Italy shot-stopper and it appears that they have been handed some good news in that regard.

Chelsea only signed Edouard Mendy last summer, but an opportunity to sign Donnarumma on a free transfer is reportedly too good to refuse.

Thomas Tuchel on Timo Werner, fourth place and red card

Real Madrid handed double injury boost

Zinedine Zidane has issued an injury update ahead of Real Madrid's clash with Chelsea on Tuesday evening.

Los Blancos take on the Blues in the first-leg of two semi-final ties in the Champions League and there's some good news for the Spanish giants.

Ferland Mendy and Toni Kroos are both in line to be available for selection against Thomas Tuchel's men.

Zidane told reporters: "The intention is that Mendy and Kroos return (for Chelsea), but we have to see.

"We have to recover as Tuesday is going to be the most difficult of the season."

Ex-referee wades into debate on Balbuena red card

Former Premier League referee Chris Foy believes Chris Kavanagh made the right decision to send Fabian Balbuena off in Chelsea's win over West Ham United.

Balbuena was shown a straight red card after Kavanagh consulted the pitch side monitor following instructions from VAR.

The Hammers defender was clearing the ball and in the follow-through action, his boot caught Ben Chilwell, who writhed around in agony following the incident.

The decision to send him off has sparked massive debate on social media channels, with many suggesting that it was a very harsh call.

However, Foy, when speaking to the Daily Mail, agreed with Kavanagh.

He said: "In real time Chris Kavanagh didn’t see the challenge by Fabian Balbuena on Ben Chilwell but VAR Peter Bankes does check it and feel it’s worthy of sanction.

"He suggests Chris go to the review area and when Chris looks at the challenge, he’s asking himself is there excessive force and has the West Ham player endangered the safety of an opponent? In both cases I think it’s clear that the answer is yes.

"Referees are there to look after the welfare of the players.

"There was a challenge a few minutes later by Vladimir Coufal on Antonio Rudiger which people were saying was similar, but it wasn’t clear-cut.”
