Chelsea receive Edouard Mendy injury blow as squad numbers are announced

Here is your Chelsea morning digest for Monday, October 12.

Chelsea confirm squad numbers

Chelsea have confirmed the new squad numbers after a host of new arrivals in the summer transfer window.

The Blues spent over £200million bringing in the likes of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell.

Chelsea's Champions League inclusions and omissions

And the exits of Willian and Pedro, as well as Michy Batshuayi’s departure on loan, meant there were some vacant numbers to be filled by the newcomers.

Here are all the numbers in Chelsea’s squad for the new season .

Chelsea team news ahead of Southampton clash

Chelsea will be without goalkeeper Edouard Mendy for next weekend’s Premier League game against Southampton.

Summer signing Hakim Ziyech, meanwhile, could be ready to make his debut for the club after playing 31 minutes for Morocco on Friday night.

The Blues should also have Christian Pulisic available for selection following his return to action in last weekend’s 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Youngster Billy Gilmour remains a long-term absentee, while Timo Werner will be assessed over the next week after missing Germany’s 3-3 draw against Turkey through illness.

Chelsea fans react to ‘Project Big Picture’

Chelsea supporters have reacted to the news that Liverpool and Manchester United are proposing a drastic change of the Premier League’s structure.

The Telegraph reported yesterday that the division’s ‘Big Six’, which includes Chelsea, will become ‘long-term stakeholders’, with the power to change regulations.

‘Project Big Picture’ would also include a £250m rescue package for the EFL, while the League Cup and Community Shield would be scrapped.

Plenty of fans have responded negatively to the news, even if it may serve to benefit the Premier League’s biggest teams.

One supporter tweeted: “Yeah, no thanks... nothing like a good crisis to force through massive power grabs.”

Another wrote: “Means to close shop and maintain the order of the big 6. Much like the power clubs dictating UEFA, it would be awful for football.”
