Chelsea receive boost ahead of Man City fixture after Pep Guardiola suffers injury blow

Manchester City have confirmed that Sergio Aguero suffered a knee injury in the 5-0 victory over Burnley on Monday night.

Aguero will now travel to Barcelona to see Dr Ramon Cugat for further examination.

The Argentine landed in a heap after being fouled by Ben Mee inside the penalty area in the closing stages of the first-half at the Etihad.

Following a VAR review, City were awarded a penalty, which Riyad Mahrez' converted to make it 3-0, but the Argentine was immediately substituted following the tackle.

"Sergio Aguero suffered damage to his left knee in our recent 5-0 win over Burnley,” City said in a statement released earlier today.

"The striker will now travel to Barcelona to see Dr Ramon Cugat for further examination. Everyone at City wishes Sergio the best with his recovery."

Aguero also took to Twitter to announce the disappointing news, he wrote: "The scans I did this morning have confirmed that I have damaged my left knee.

"It’s a pity but I’m in good spirits and so focused to come back as soon as possible. Thank you very much for all your messages!"

While Guardiola admitted that Aguero could be out for the rest of the season due to the injury he picked up.

"It doesn't look good. unfortunately," he said post-match. "We are going to see tomorrow. he was struggling in the last month with a problem in the knee and now he felt something so we will see tomorrow exactly what he has but it doesn't look good for this season.

"Tomorrow we will see and know exactly what he has. The doctor says it will take time. A few games [out] for sure but maybe tomorrow the tests he will get good news - we will see."

City have their third game in just over a week on Thursday when they travel to take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Frank Lampard’s side currently hold a five-point lead over Manchester United in the race to secure Champions League football next season
