Kovacic and Mount return, Hudson-Odoi dropped, no Tomori - predicted Chelsea line-up vs Arsenal

Frank Lampard has had 24 hours more than most Premier League teams to prepare for this afternoon's clash against Arsenal.

There could be temptation to rotate his side after the 2-0 loss at home to Southampton on Boxing Day, but one player who will certainly miss the trip to the Emirates Stadium is Reece James because of an ankle injury.

Meanwhile, Marcos Alonso is a doubt.

Alan smith on Chelsea's transfer budget and targets

"Marcos Alonso got a small muscle injury," Frank Lampard said. "Hopefully he'll be OK for Arsenal but Reece James probably won't.

"He got an ankle injury and we need to look at it.

"It's probably going to be a bit longer."

Callum Hudson-Odoi is set to drop out after struggling in the 2-0 defeat at home to Southampton, while Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic are likely to start in attacking midfield roles.

Mateo Kovacic will almost certainly return having served a one-game suspension versus the Saints, picking up a fifth yellow card of the season against Spurs last Sunday.

Jorginho is more likely than N'Golo Kante to drop out if Lampard sticks with two holding players, although there is a chance the head coach switches to three in the middle.

That would raise questions over where Mason Mount plays.

The England international created more than Hudson-Odoi and Willian despite only playing the second half against Southampton but he would start out wide if Lampard opts for his more experienced midfield trio or three at the back.

Still, it is impossible to predict whether Chelsea continue with a back three or revert to a four but if it is the latter expect Toni Rudiger to be partnered by Kurt Zouma because the Frenchman will be fresher having come off at the break against Southampton.

A three would likely work better away to Arsenal, who will look to get on the front foot, rather than against a team like Southampton employing a low block.

Chelsea predicted XI: Kepa; Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Zouma, Emerson; Kovacic, Kante; Willian, Mount, Pulisic; Abraham
