Chelsea player ratings vs Villarreal: Kante class, Chalobah good, Pulisic struggles

Edouard Mendy

Made an important stop from Boulaye Dia in the first half not long after Chelsea went ahead. Almost gifted Villarreal an equaliser with a dreadful clearance, Moreno could only hit the post but thanks to Mendy's fingertips, redeeming himself. 7

Callum Hudson-Odoi

At right wing-back once again and, as he has done for most of pre-season, spent the majority of the game in the opponents half. Stood up well when Chelsea were on the ropes in the second half. Didn't see enough of the ball though and while the appeal as a wing-back is there, it's just not his best position. 7

Trevoh Chalobah

A surprise starter in some respects but maybe not so after such a strong pre-season campaign. He was good again but not totally flawless, some of his passes were underhit but he didn't miss much defensively all night. Had to make a few key clearances early in the second half and was particularly good in extra time. 8

Antonio Rudiger

Made his 150th appearance for Chelsea. Booked in the first half for a full-bloodied tackle on Pino, won the ball but was somewhat reckless. Horrendous pass left Chelsea exposed when Moreno equalised for Villarreal. Ropey. Good penalty in the shootout. 6

Kurt Zouma

Should have put Chelsea 2-0 up before half time but ballooned over from Ziyech's sublime centre. Defensively he was good, won his headers and didn't get beaten on the deck. 7

Marcos Alonso

Excellent pass down the line for Havertz to lay on Ziyech's opener and was one of Chelsea's better performers in the first half. Probably Chelsea's best attacker after the break as his teammates really struggled to get anything going. Scored in the shootout. 7

N'Golo Kante

Showcased some prime Kante-ball by taking the ball off Moreno in midfield before firing just wide in the tenth minute. Constantly nicked the ball off the Villarreal attackers and was Chelsea's best player again before surprisingly taken off with 25 minutes to go. Assumption is saving him for Saturday. 8

Mateo Kovacic

Busy and industrious as he always is but the match seemed to pass him by at times and he was sloppy in possession. Started the second half slowly and wasn't really at the races throughout In fairness, he had to get through a lot of work. 6

Hakim Ziyech

Kept up his fine pre-season/summer form by netting the opener as he swept home from close range. Should have had an assist too but for Zouma's wild finish and was fabulous in the first half. Forced off five minutes before half time with what looked like a dislocated shoulder which is brutal luck. 8

Timo Werner

Some of his decision making in the first 25 minutes was questionable at best and was pretty quiet in the opening half. Much the same after the break, was never really in the game. A lot of ineffective running. 5

Kai Havertz

Put a cross in for Ziyech on a plate that the Moroccan couldn't miss. Glided around the park, fired an effort into the side netting early in the second half. Switched through the middle with the introduction of Mount. Did OK but wasn't great and looked shattered in extra time. Missed in the shootout with a tired spot kick. 6

Substitutions

Christian Pulisic (for Ziyech, 42')

Very poor, almost anonymous for the time he was on the pitch in normal time. Better in extra time but skewed wide a very presentable chance in the 99th minute. Scored his penalty. 5

Jorginho (for Kante, 65')

A first run-out of the summer for the Euro 2020 winner, dictated things as per. Typically sassy penalty in the shootout. 6

Mason Mount (for Werner, 65')

Like Jorginho, got his first summer minutes under his belt. Not too much of the ball went his way. Saw one effort well saved by Asenjo. Scored in the shootout. 6

Andreas Christensen (for Zouma, 65')

Another player to see his first match action since the Euros. Didn't look like he'd been away for a few weeks after the Euros, slotted back in seamlessly. 6

Cesar Azpilicueta (for Hudson-Odoi, 82')

Got a few more minutes than perhaps he and Tuchel anticipated with the game going to extra time. Confident penalty in the shootout. 6

Kepa (for Mendy, 120')

Brought on for the penalty shootout. Saved Mandi's spot kick and the vital one from Raul Albiol to seal the shootout win for Chelsea. 7
