Chelsea player ratings vs Tottenham: Rudiger makes Thiago Silva absence a footnote with dominant display

Chelsea will take a significant advantage into the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Tottenham after a 2-0 victory on Wednesday night.

Here’s how Thomas Tuchel’s side rated at Stamford Bridge...

Kepa Arrizabalaga 7

Save from Kane free-kick soon after restart was first action of the night, a late save Lo Celso his most important. A good night which bodes well for his run in the team in Mendy’s absence.

Cesar Azpilicueta 6

Solidity on the right facilitated Chelsea’s lopsided adventure down the left but late departure through injury will be a real worry to an already depleted side.

Antonio Rudiger 7

In different ways, marshalled both Kane and Sarr through the game as he made sure Thiago Silva’s absence was a footnote. For such an erratic character, has become so reliable.

Malang Sarr 7

Did a good job getting tight to Moura, who can be a tricky customer on the turn, and tough in the tackle. Can be marked up for his lack of game time in any system, let alone this one.

Marcos Alonso 7

Attacking instincts hardly quelled by switch to back four, won ball high up the pitch for the opener and defended well enough.

Saul Niguez 7

Still looks so much like the new boy in this team even halfway through the campaign, but battled hard in midfield. Encouraging display.

Jorginho 6

Predictably central to the vice-like grip in which Chelsea held their opposition throughout the first-half.

Mason Mount 6

Buzzed about and linked nicely with Havertz but did not create a great deal under close attention from Skipp and Hojbjerg.

Hakim Ziyech 8

Free-kick delivery made second goal even if there wasn’t a blue shirt attacking it and should have had an assist when Lukaku glanced wide. Driven pass to Werner was outrageous and deserved a better finish.

Kai Havertz 7

A real threat from the moment his flick set Lukaku away inside a minute. Slid goal under Lloris but hurt his hand in the process and eventually forced off at half-time after another awkward fall.

Romelu Lukaku 6

Got a muted reception on his return to the XI and responded with a fairly average display, but went close with header and teed up Ziyech.

Substitutes

Timo Werner (Havertz 46’) 6

Looked lively after his introduction and fired just wide on the hour-mark but should have done better from Ziyech’s pass.

Mateo Kovacic (Mount 73’)

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Saul 73’)

Christian Pulisic (Ziyech 79’)
