Chelsea player ratings vs Newcastle: Jorginho, Kovacic poor as Joe Willock goal separates sides

Edouard Mendy - Newcastle's press ensured the Senegal international was tested with the ball at his feet to mixed success. The goalkeeper was comfortable in his usual business of claiming the ball in the air and making saves, however. Produced an essential stop against Sean Longstaff in the second period. Could do nothing for Joe Willock's strike. 6.

Cesar Azpilicueta - After starting the match in the back three, the Blues captain was soon sent to wing-back for the afternoon. He showed plenty of endeavour to get up and down the wing but had some sketchy moments up against the likes of Joe Willock. Overall solid but perhaps didn't offer what Chelsea needed. 6.

Trevoh Chalobah - Survived a handball shout at the close of the first half but otherwise put in a decent defensive display but looked to Mendy as his passing option too often. 6.

Kalidou Koulibaly - The defender made some crucial interceptions in the opening half and was unfortunate to see his pressure on Miguel Almiron see the ball fall to Willock for the midfielder's goal. 6.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek - Looked to attack down the right early but was quickly replaced by Thiago Silva after picking up an injury. N/A

Jorginho - Picked up a first-half yellow card for a clumsy challenge and struggled to make his influence felt on the ball. 4.

Mateo Kovacic - It was a quiet outing from the Croatian midfielder who could not get on the ball in the centre of the pitch for Chelsea much like his Italian teammate. Saw more of the ball when Chelsea moved to three in midfield but was sloppy overall. 4.

Lewis Hall - The 18-year-old had a couple of early, wayward passes but showed the same relentlessness as he did against Manchester City. Some difficult moments but a performance he will benefit from overall. 6.

Conor Gallagher - It was a very mixed evening for Gallagher with his defensive industry and contribution proving essential, but his struggle to retain possession when on the ball slowing Chelsea's ability to build attacks of their own. Was sent to wingback in the second half before returning to the centre of midfield and continued his efforts well. 6.

Armando Broja - The young striker had quite the battle with Sven Botman and was up for the battle with the Dutch defender. It was a shame he could not get closer to goal but had some impressive moments carrying the ball and offering Chelsea an outlet on the occasions they could release the ball upfield. 6.

Mason Mount - Showed some moments of a good relationship with Lewis Hall but failed to have enough of an impact on the game. 5.

Substitutes

Thiago Silva - A typically solid outing on the whole from the Brazilian who defended well as Chelsea were under pressure. 6.

Christian Pulisic - The USA star provided Chelsea with another dimension with his dribbling on the ball. 6.

Kai Havertz - Headed wide from a corner after his introduction but otherwise did not have a great deal of success. 5.

Hakim Ziyech - The winger could not influence the game after his introduction. 5.

Marc Cucurella - For suffering with sickness, Cucurella was one of Chelsea's better performers when he entered the field and showed some quality in swinging the ball into the box. 6.
