Chelsea player ratings vs Monchengladbach: Mount shines again as pre-season ends with a draw

Chelsea came back from two goals down to claim a draw against Borussia Monchengladbach in their final game of pre-season on Saturday.

first half goals from Alassane Plea and Jonas Hofmann gave the Bundesliga side a two goals cushion going into the half-time interval.

But a duo of second half penalties calmly dispatched by Tammy Abraham and Ross Barkley ensured that the Blues went through pre-season under new head coach Frank Lampard unbeaten.

Lampard now has just one week to prepare for Chelsea's Premier League opening fixture against Manchester United, with the Blues travelling to Old Trafford to take on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer men on Sunday 11th August (4:40pm kick off).

Players would have been looking to impress ahead of the opening fixture, with places in the starting lineup up for grabs.

But who managed to impress and who didn't? Take a look below at the football.london player ratings to find out.

First half player ratings

Kepa Arrizabalaga

Sloppy pass from the goalkeeper saw the hosts punish Chelsea as Alassane Plea found the bottom corner. Couldn't do much about the shot but it all came from his pass. Should have done much better for the second one as well as Jonas Hofmann poked the ball through his legs. 3

Cesar Azpilicueta

Tried to get forward when he could and put a nice ball into Mason Mount early on after some good play with Pedro. Needs to work on his crossing as wasted a good opportunity midway through the half with the box loaded. 4

Andreas Christensen

Tough return to Borussia-Park for the player as Chelsea's midfield let the hosts run through them time and time again. 4

Kurt Zouma

Was troubled by Monchengladbach's attackers throughout the half as they struggled to get to grips with the German side. 4

Emerson Palmieri

Couldn't get forward as much as he would have liked in the first half. 4

Jorginho

Kept things neat and tidy when he had the ball but Monchengladbach just ran through the midfield countless times with ease. 4

Mateo Kovacic

Let Plea get beyond him way too easily outside the box for the opener. First half summed up by a simple pass to Azpilicueta that he somehow put out of play. Nowhere near the high standards he's produced so far this summer. 3

Pedro

Bright from the Spaniard early on and will believe he should have done better with his effort after Mount found him inside the box. 5

Mason Mount

Headed wide of the target inside the first few minutes after a good ball into the box from Azpilicueta. Always looked for the ball and one of Chelsea's better players in the opening 45 minutes. 6

Christian Pulisic

Played Mount too wide when the Blues tried to hit Monchengladbach on the counter from their corner. Not a bad showing from the new signing. 5

Tammy Abraham

So unlucky not to score as Yann Sommer denied him with a superb save after Emerson's long ball fell kindly to him in the box. No chances of note after that, however. 5

Second half player ratings

Kepa Arrizabalaga

A passenger for most of the second half with Chelsea dominating and looking to find a way back into the game. Good save at the end to stop Monchengladbach netting a winner. 4

Cesar Azpilicueta

Remained strong at the back and pushed on at times to help his side going forward. 5

Andreas Christensen

Much more comfortable for the defender after the break following a rather tricky first half. 5

Kurt Zouma

Better from the ex-Everton loanee in the second half with Monchengladbach not threatening as much. 5

Emerson Palmieri

Had a few more chances to get forward before he was subbed midway through the half. 4

Jorginho

Good range of passing from the Italian in an improved second-half display. The hosts weren't running through him like they did in the first half as Chelsea dominated. 5

Mateo Kovacic

So much better after the break after a tough opening 45 minutes. Did well to win the first penalty after a brilliant run into the box before he was subbed off. 5

Ross Barkley scores screamer in warm up

Pedro

Couple of decent passages of play but nothing to really threaten the German side prior to his substitution. 4

Mason Mount

Came incredibly close to reducing the deficit as Yann Sommer made an outstanding one-handed save from close range as the ball looked set to hit the net. Very bright again just like in the first half as he bids to impress his boss ahead of next week's opener at Manchester United. 7

Christian Pulisic

Not much of an impact on the game prior to his substitution. 4

Tammy Abraham

Will be cursing Sommer tonight after the goalkeeper produced two fine saves to stop him from scoring certain goal. However, managed to get his goal with a confident penalty beyond the Swiss international. Put himself about in his time on the pitch and caused problems for the hosts. 6

Substitutes

Ross Barkley (Mateo Kovacic, 66)

You would have backed him to score his one-on-one given his fine form in pre-season so far. Thankfully he kept his calm to net the equaliser from the spot. 5

Marcos Alonso (Emerson, 66)

Great play from the Spaniard to tee up Olivier Giroud for his opening after his introduction. Got forward a lot as he tried to help the team back into the game. 5

Olivier Giroud (Tammy Abraham, 66)

Should have done much better with his effort on goal as he was played through by Alonso before making it easy for Sommer with a tame effort. 4

Kenedy (Christian Pulisic, 66)

Barely involved following his introduction after his good performances in Japan. 4

N'Golo Kante (Pedro, 72)

Great to see him back on the pitch after his recent issues with his knee. Put himself about in the closing stages with his usual energetic display. 4
