Chelsea player ratings vs Man City: Mateo Kovacic good, Lukaku, Pulisic, Ziyech all struggle

Kepa Arrizabalaga

Good stop from Grealish late in the first half after Kovacic's error. Might have got nearer De Bruyne's strike if we're being hyper-critical, a step to his right proved costly. 6

Cesar Azpilicueta

Had a lot on his plate with the rampaging Cancelo and Foden coming at him with regularity. Looked exhausted as the second half wore on and Grealish had some good moments down his side after the break. 6

Antonio Rudiger

Playing on the right of the back three instead of his usual left sided spot. Plenty of hustle as usual, stood up well in the face of consistent City pressure. 7

Thiago Silva

Looked relatively comfortable despite City's dominance as they shifted the ball out to the wings more often than not. 7

Malang Sarr

Superbly timed tackle on Sterling in the first half to snuff out a chance for City. Sometimes looked a tad jumpy and a bit over eager too. Some good interceptions in the second half as well, a good outing once again for the Frenchman. 7

Marcos Alonso

Booked in the seventh minute for bringing down Sterling and the wide man had him on the ropes thereafter. Managed to last to the 80th minute before Mount replaced him. A struggle all game. 5

N'Golo Kante

Back in the starting eleven after his Covid-enforced absence. Sloppy on the ball in the first half, though his teammates weren't much better in possession. His usual energetic self but was shrugged off by De Bruyne for the winner. 6

Mateo Kovacic

Started the game like a player very much at ease with his game at the moment, effortlessly winning the ball back in midfield before hacking down Bernardo Silva and getting booked. Seemed to then lose his way a bit before regaining composure after the break. Did OK but was chasing shadows a bit. 7

Hakim Ziyech

Awful pass when trying to find Lukaku drew a rage from Tuchel on the touchline and spurned some very good positions in the first half. Has been a thorn in City's side before but not this afternoon. A real struggle and was hauled off midway through the second half. 5

Christian Pulisic

Very quiet in the opening 45 minutes and had a fair bit of tracking back to do as well with Cancelo. Couldn't get into the game at all and no surprise he was dragged off with Ziyech. 5

Romelu Lukaku

Made a poor decision to pass to Ziyech rather than shoot early in the game. Did shoot early in the second half but was too close to Ederson. Spurned Chelsea's two best openings of the game. 6

Substitutes

Callum Hudson-Odoi (for Ziyech, 68')

Wasted a good free kick with a dreadful delivery then booted the rebound out of play. Summed up Chelsea's day. 5

Timo Werner (for Pulisic, 68')

Forced a good block from Laporte not long after Chelsea went behind but ran down too many blind alleys. 5

Mason Mount (for Alonso, 80') No rating.
