Chelsea player ratings vs Liverpool as Blues suffer FA Cup final penalty shootout heartbreak

Edouard Mendy

Almost offered Liverpool a chance when his early pass out clipped the head of a Liverpool player but soon redeemed himself with a solid save from Luis Diaz. Claimed the ball bravely in second half stoppage time to deny Ibrahima Konate. Made a great save against Sadio Mane in the penalty shoutout but it wasn't enough for the Blues. 6.

Trevoh Chalobah

Diaz had plenty of joy exploiting the space between Chalobah and James in the opening 15 minutes of the match but the former Lorient loanee provided a crucial clearance by the Chelsea goal-line and performed better when attacking the ball early. Much like the Carabao Cup final grew into the game and unafraid to put his body in the line of fire. 6.

Thiago Silva

Picked up an early knock during Chalobah's crucial clearance but soon regained his groove to pirouette around Sadio Mane with the ball. Typically composed against a challenging Liverpool frontline and even showed a turn of pace to slow Diaz in his tracks late in the second period. 6.

Antonio Rudiger

A solid if unspectacular outing but little of Liverpool's threat came down his side of the back three. The German defender guarded the outball to Diogo Joto and Trent Alexander-Arnold well. 7.

Reece James

Took some time to work out his position along with Chalobah in the opening period but brought most of Chelsea's threat on the Blues' right flank alongside Mason Mount. Showed his physicality throughout the 120 minutes to keep carrying the ball and complete his defensive duties. 6.

Mateo Kovacic

Struggled to dominate the midfield in the early stages during his unexpected start but still managed an excellent tackle on Sadio Mane outside the Chelsea box to show he was still up to speed albeit not entirely in his groove. The Croatian won possession back more than anyone else was on the pitch. 6.

Jorginho

Covered plenty of the Wembley pitch to ensure he was always involved in attack in defence and showed his ability to keep the ball in tight spaces. A bit sloppy in moments but also showed his passing ability with his first half lob to Romelu Lukaku. Took the leadership role on the pitch. 7.

Marcos Alonso

Showed good speed to stop Mohamed Salah in his tracks during a threatening Liverpool counter and was threatening in the Liverpool box too. Alisson first saved from the Spaniard when Pulisic waited too long to release his teammate and Alonso put a shot wide in the opening minute of the second half. Alonso again had the Reds' keeper scrambling when his free kick from a tight angle hit the crossbar. 7.

Mason Mount

The 23-year-old appeared to create every Chelsea chance in the opening period and despite not having a great deal of the ball showed he was ready to make an impact. A quieter second half from the England international but rarely short of an idea. Brutally saw his penalty saved. 6.

Romelu Lukaku

It wasn't too long into the match before the Belgian drew Thomas Tuchel's ire. A handball as the ball came into him near the penalty spot didn't help the 29-year-old find his feet in the opening 20 minutes. The Belgian's first touch needed to be better for him to be more proficient as he recorded just once shot during his time on the pitch. 5.

Christian Pulisic

Consistently found himself in a position to test Alisson but rarely found the target. The American looked good when driving with the ball but there were relatively few opportunities to exploit this despite Liverpool's high line. Became Chelsea's striker when Lukaku was replaced, but looked lethargic as the game went on. 6.

Substitutes:

N'Golo Kante (66mins) - Showed promise in some attacking forays between the Liverpool lines and his ability to cover ground quickly to catch a sprint Mane to dispossess him during extra time. 6.

Hakim Ziyech (85mins) - Looked to make something happen during extra time and had a penalty appeal waved away by referee Craig Pawson. Produced a really quality delivery into the box that was cleared by Alexander-Arnold.

Cesar Azpilicueta (115mins) - Solid 15 minutes, not required to do much. Struck the post with his penalty.6.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (115mins) - Didn't even complete a half of extra-time. 5.

Ross Barkley - Not enough time to make an impact before the penalty shootout where he did his duty. 5.
