Chelsea player ratings vs Bayern Munich: Cole Palmer back to his best as defence struggles

Chelsea marked their return to the Champions League with a defeat as they were beaten by Bayern Munich.

Harry Kane struck twice for the German champions, who also profited from Trevoh Chalobah scoring an own goal.

Cole Palmer, who was making his 100th appearance for Chelsea, found the back of the net, but it was not enough to stop the Blues falling to a 3-1 loss.

The defeat is Chelsea’s first of the season and they will have to dust themselves down quickly ahead of a trip to Old Trafford on Saturday.

Here is how Standard Sport rated the Chelsea players...

Robert Sanchez 7

Beaten three times, but made two excellent saves early in the second half. The one from Olise was exceptional.

Malo Gusto 6

A mixed performance. Great going forward - and assisted Palmer’s goal - but it was his error that led to Bayern scoring a third.

Tosin Adarabioyo 5

A difficult night for the centre-back, with Bayern’s attack very sharp. Kane’s movement and link-up with Serge Gnabry pulled him out of position.

Trevoh Chalobah 5

Scored an unfortunate own goal as Bayern took the lead in the first half. Struggled to deal with the threat of Kane.

Marc Cucurella 5

Had a tough night up against Olise, who was so lively. Rare to see Cucurella being troubled like this.

Reece James 6

Moved into midfield as Gusto was deployed at right-back. Had a steady game, but not as effective when playing in his usual position.

Moises Caicedo 6

Typically busy in the middle of the park and helped start the move that led to Palmer’s goal.

Cole Palmer 8

Scored a superb goal as he marked his 100th appearance for Chelsea in style. Denied a second goal by VAR. The Blues’ best attacking player.

Enzo Fernandez 5

Given the chance to play as the team’s No10, however he did not have much of an impact. Missed a good chance early on, which Palmer created.

Pedro Neto 5

Had a quiet game and was outshone by Palmer on the other flank. Taken off with just over 20 minutes to go for Alejandro Garnacho.

Joao Pedro 6

Largely forced to feed off scraps for most of the night. On the end of a painful stray elbow from Jonathan Tah in the build-up to Palmer’s goal.

Substitutes

Alejandro Garnacho (Neto 68’) 5

Like Neto, could not make an impact and lift Chelsea’s left side.

Andrey Santos (James 68’) 6

A bright cameo. Played a great ball for Palmer, which he finished off, but the goal was offside.

Estevao (Fernandez 81’) N/A

Subs not used: Curd, Jorgensen, Fofana, Acheampong, Hato, Santos, Buonanotte, George, Gittens, Guiu
