Chelsea player ratings vs Aston Villa – Hall stands out, Hutchinson dangerous, Broja concern

Marcus Bettinelli

Chelsea's third-choice goalkeeper could do little to stop John McGinn's early opener but he did produce a string of saves throughout the remainder of the game to deny the likes of Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings from grabbing a second for Villa. 7

Josh Brooking

Started at right-back and had a first-half shot deflected wide. Brooking was moved into the centre of defence midway through the second period and was shown a yellow card for stopping a promising Villa attack. Came off with 18 minutes to play. 6

Alfie Gilchrist

Brought into the side late on for Trevoh Chalobah, Gilchrist was a little overeager in trying to win the ball in the build-up to the Aston Villa opener. Largely did well against Watkins, who is a senior international with England and was in contention to go to the World Cup. 6

Bashir Humphreys

Similar to Gilchrist, Humphreys was pulled too far forward ahead of McGinn's opener. Used the ball well as the match progressed and made an important header in the second period as Aston Villa searched for a second. 6

Marc Cucurella

This was a chance for the Spanish international to get a runout in his favoured full-back role rather than an emergency centre-back, and there were a couple of nice bursts forward from Cucurella and two strong challenges on teenager Kaden Young. Didn't offer enough in the final third, however. 6

Jorginho

The senior figure in the Chelsea midfield, Jorginho operated as a single number six and didn't get out of second gear. There were a couple of eye-catching passes to get the Blues on the attack but this definitely felt like a mere fitness exercise for the 30-year-old. 6

Charlie Webster

There are a number of clubs across Europe keeping an eye on the 18-year-old given his contract expires in the summer. Webster was in the opening period if not a little cautious with his passing. He was shifted to right-back as the second half progressed as changes were made. 6

Lewis Hall

Still only 18 years old, Hall has looked comfortable in his previous three first-team outings. Those were at centre-back and left wing-back, however. Tonight he was given a chance in midfield and his energy to get across the pitch coupled with his quality on the ball stood out. Was unfortunate to not score with a second-half effort that was saved by Olsen. 7

Omari Hutchinson

This was an opportunity for Hutchinson to make his mark. It's one he took. The 19-year-old fashioned Chelsea's first chance of the contest and struck the post with a fine effort after cutting inside beyond Lucas Digne. Faded a little in the second period but showcased he has something to offer the first team. 7

Armando Broja

Broja was on the fringes of the contest in the opening quarter-hour; a blocked shot was his only sight of goal. It was in the 18th minute that the 21-year-old attempted to close down Ezri Konsa and was left screaming in pain on the turf holding his knee. The hope is the injury is not as serious as it appeared. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

The 33-year-old started out wide and teed up an early chance for Hutchinson that was saved. Aubameyang was shifted into the centre after Broja was stretchered off and forced Olsen into a routine stop from distance. His passing was poor after the break and given his quality, didn't offer enough. 5
