Chelsea player ratings: Mason Mount superb, Bakayoko awful & Ross Barkley impresses at Reading

Chelsea clinched their third pre-season win of the summer with a 4-3 victory over Reading at the Madejski Stadium yesterday.

The Blues went behind in the first half when Josh Barrett lobbed Willy Caballero, however Ross Barkley's wonderful free-kick put them back on level terms.

They then took a 2-1 lead into the break through Kenedy's excellent finish from outside the box.

Frank Lampard made ten changes at half-time and Reading instantly got an equaliser when Mark Morrison netted from a corner.

However, Mason Mount bagged a quick-fire brace for the Blues, with Sam Baldock getting a consolation strike for the hosts.

Here is how Oliver Harbord rated the Chelsea players.

First half Chelsea player ratings

Willy Caballero

Didn't have a lot to do in terms of shot stopping, and only really had to pick the ball out of his net in the first half. 5

Davide Zappacosta

Tried to be adventurous on the right and one really nice move where he cut the ball back to Bakayoko. Gave a good option at times. 6

Andreas Christensen

The experienced defender in the heart of defence and did well at times, although caught out over the top from the long ball. Beaten in the air from corners a few times. 6

Most impressive Chelsea stars vs Barcelona

Fikayo Tomori

A pretty shaky first 45 minutes from the youngster, with the connection with Christensen not there and often caught out with balls over the top.  Grew into it as the half went on. 5

Marcos Alonso

Looked to get down the left when he could, but that meant there was a lot of space behind him to exploit. Not the best half from him. 5

Danny Drinkwater

Tried to be effective on the ball and look for good balls. However, didn't do too much with it, although neat and tidy through most of the half. 5

Tiemoue Bakayoko

Gave the ball away so many times in the first half, often when he didn't have anyone around him either. Grew into the game a little more, but it was another poor showing from the Frenchman. 3

Christian Pulisic

Really showed his pace with a couple of lovely early bursts. Always trying to make something happen, but it didn't really come off a lot of the time. 6

Ross Barkley

Always trying to find the gaps in the spaces between the midfield and the attack, and he did that well at times. A stunning free-kick to show his technical ability and get the equaliser. 7

Kenedy

It has been a bright pre-season for the Brazilian and that continued with a decent finish at the end of the half to find the bottom corner. 7

Olivier Giroud

Not a great amount of service to him, as the ball bounced off him on a couple of occasions. Did well to win the free-kick for the equaliser. 5

Second half Chelsea player ratings

Willy Caballero

Couldn't do anything about the goal, and made a decent save leading up to it. 5

Cesar Azpilicueta

A couple of loose passes early on. Looked to really get down the right, however wasn't found on a few occasions. Solid defensively. 6

David Luiz

A stunning shot that smashed the crossbar, but the worrying thing was the defending wasn't great from the centre-backs. Too often there were big spaces between the two. 5

Kurt Zouma

Really poor defending from a corner early in the half to allow Mark Morrison to score. Some nice tackles, however the connection with Luiz was a little rusty at times. 5

Emerson Palmieri

A wonderful cross into the box and playing very high up the pitch. A couple of times caught out of possesion again, but still leading the left-back race. 7

Jorginho

Looked frustrated at the base of the 4-4-2 diamond at times after a couple of heavy challenges on him. But moved the ball on well and quietly went about his business. 6

Mateo Kovacic

Looking a lot more comfortable this summer, however a poor ball that lead to the Reading goal. But really drove hard in the middle of the park and was impressive for a lot of the half. 7

Mason Mount

Having a really good pre-season and again he showed that with a couple of neat finishes. His work-rate has been exceptional, all over the park and in so much of the good play. 8

Pedro

Playing at the tip of the diamond, a couple of nice bits of play, however wasn't on the same wavelength as the strikers at times. Constantly looking to get on the ball though. 6

Tammy Abraham

A lot of movement and energy, trying to get on the ball. But his energy off the ball was the best. Constantly closing down defenders and making things happen. Not a lot of action in front of the goal. 7

Michy Batshuayi

Lost the ball too many times. However, did well for the first Mount goal. In front of goal, had nothing to really go on in terms of attack and it was a bit of a quiet afternoon for him. 5

Substitute

Jamie Cumming (on for Caballero 63')

A nice save down to his right early, and couldn't do much about the goal. 5
