Chelsea player ratings: Jorginho woeful, Azpilicueta daft, James good as top four secured - just

Edouard Mendy

Didn’t have much of chance with Traore’s goal. Withdrawn at half time, we assume through injury after colliding with the post. 6

Cesar Azpilicueta

Good going forward but had a real struggle defensively, especially when Grealish popped up on his flank. Sent off late on after a tough afternoon. Tuchel needs to put him back in at centre half for the Champions League final. 5

Reece James

Played as a right-sided centre half for a third game in a row but his pace, and delivery, is sorely missed when he doesn't play at wing-back. Good again, though. 7

Thiago Silva

Had his hands full with Ollie Watkins, who caused him a few problems. Solid enough but not his best performance in recent weeks. 6

Antonio Rudiger

Dealt better with Watkins than Silva did but again, was a bit below the levels he has been over the last couple of months. 6

Ben Chilwell

Seemed to have the freedom of Villa Park as Traore didn’t bother tracking him back. Kourtney Hause marshalled him well for the majority but lost the defender as he scored to pull a goal back. 6

Jorginho

Overrun in the first half as he couldn’t get anywhere near John McGinn. Clumsy tackle on Traore to coincide a penalty. Hauled off for Ziyech after a poor afternoon. 4

Mateo Kovacic

Started the game like it wasn’t his first start in six weeks as he was everywhere but soon started to make mistakes. Gassed after half timer which wasn't a surprise, subbed off for Havertz with the Blues 2-0 down. 5

Mason Mount

Wasted the best chance of the opening 25 minutes when blazing high and wide inside the box. Looked confused as to his role in the second half, especially after the introduction of Ziyech. Looked a bit off the pace throughout. 6

Christian Pulisic

Didn’t look at the races in the opening 45 minutes as the game passed him by. Frustrated after half time as well before he laid on Chilwell's finish to pull one back. Clearly has it in his locker, just isn't consistent enough. 6

Timo Werner

Earned the wrath of Tuchel on three occasions in the first half after wasting good positions, one saw the head coach turn away from the pitch in disgust. Didn't really look like scoring and had one ruled out for offside, though it was against Azpilicueta in the build-up. 5

Substitutions

Kepa (for Mendy, 46’)

Sent the wrong way from the penalty spot. Not much else to do, really. 6

Hakim Ziyech (for Jorginho, 60’)

Didn't bring too much to play a part in the build-up to Chilwell's goal. 6
