Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has £35m bid 'rejected' after seven months of talks

Todd Boehly has reportedly been rebuffed in his attempts to buy another football club.

The Chelsea owner, who bought the Stamford Bridge club from Roman Abramovich last year with his Clearlake Capital partners, is reportedly interested in buying Portuguese side SAD Portimonense. Portuguese media outlet Record, via Sport Witness, reports that Boehly has seen a £35 million bid for 75 per cent of the club 'rejected'.

It is claimed that Boehly has been speaking to Portimonense chiefs since September last year. Portimonense, 14th in Portugal's top tier, have also reportedly been targeted by the City Football Group, run by Manchester City's owners, along with Japanese, Chinese and Mexican interest, as well as from the Middle East.

It is reported that any offer from Boehly would rise to £44m if certain objectives are reached but his interest has been dismissed because Portimonense's current owners are said to be keen on developing the club. The claims emerged after Boehly's reported interest in French side Strasbourg emerged.

Boehly wants to create a multi-club model like the CFG and Red Bull groups have done, with the latter running RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg and New York Red Bulls. Meanwhile, Aston Villa's owners, Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, recently struck a deal to acquire 46 per cent of the Portuguese club Vitoria.

"We've talked about having a multi-club model," Boehly said. "I would love to continue to build out the footprint.

"There are different countries where there are advantages to having a club. Red Bull does a good job, Man City has a big network of clubs.

"Our goal is to ensure pathways for our young stars to get on to the Chelsea pitch while getting them real game time. "To do that is through another club in a really competitive league in Europe."
