Chelsea offer new sex abuse apology to 17 grooming survivors

Chelsea have apologised “unreservedly” to young players who were the target of a “prolific sexual abuser”.

Charles Geekie QC’s report, with evidence from 23 victims, said chief scout Eddie Heath had groomed and attacked boys, aged 10 to 17, in the 1970s.

Club chairman Bruce Buck has met with 17 of the abused to now apologise.

The report said some Chelsea officials must have “turned a blind eye to what they saw”.

Former Chelsea assistant boss Dario Gradi, 78, was heavily criticised for missing chances “to prevent Heath’s abuse”.

Gradi denies “smoothing over” claims.

The report states Heath had a close friendship with another paedophile, John Butcher – whose behaviour was exposed by the Mirror. Both men worked as scouts for Chelsea.

Former Blues star Gary Johnson revealed the scandal in 2016.

He admitted having been paid £50,000 “hush money” after years of abuse by Heath.

Johnson, 59, wants the club to compensate the other victims.

Manchester City offered six-figure payments to those assaulted by coach Barry Bennell.

A separate review by charity Barnardo’s found Gwyn Williams, ex-Chelsea academy director, made racist remarks “on a routine basis” to young black players, though he denies this.

Chelsea’s board apologised “unreservedly”.

An NSPCC spokesperson said: “Chelsea has rightly apologised and committed to ensuring that abuse like this cannot happen at the club again.”
