Chelsea news: Zouma decision, Lampard makes shock call, Kepa injury update and player ratings

The first game of Chelsea's pre-season tour of Japan ended in defeat.

A goal from ex-Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Leandro Damiao handed Kawasaki Frontale a 1-0 win and Frank Lampard's side must bounce back against Barcelona next week.

Although, the new Blues head coach won't be too concerned about the defeat as it is pre-season after all and much of the focus is on player performances and development ahead of the new campaign.

Lampard's side have several more friendlies planned before the big Premier League kick-off against Manchester United on August 11.

Although, it will be rather quiet in the transfer window in regards to incoming as a transfer ban means that the Blues will not be able to register any new players before deadline day.

With that said, there's still plenty of exciting things for supporters to look forward to and here's the news emerging from Stamford Bridge over the last 24 hours.

Zouma's future

The France international impressed on loan at Everton last season, so much so that Toffees boss Marco Silva was keen to have him back at Goodison Park permanently.

However, that won't be happening.

Lampard addressed Kurt Zouma's future following the loss against Kawasaki Frontale and made it crystal clear that he wants the defender to stay.

"In terms of Kurt Zouma, he's a very good defender for us, very good player, very good person and professional," Lampard told reporters. "I want him here, simple as that.

"We are competitive with the centre-backs we have in the team and he had a very good season at Everton and I can understand why they want him. He's a Chelsea player and I want him. I want him to be happy and he's working really hard.

"If he competes for a position and plays well, he plays."

Kenedy's second chance

It's clear that the slate has been wiped clean following Lampard's appointment as head coach.

And that means certain players who were out on loan last season could be welcomed back into the fold for 2019/2020.

One player in question is Kenedy who seems to have caught Lampard's attention.

"In terms of Kenedy, my feeling coming into a big squad with a transfer ban was that I need to asses the players for as long as I can in pre-season to make sure we pick a squad with me having had good eyes on them in training and in games.

"If Kenedy continues to show the attitude and plays the way he played today, then he's given a great case to stay here, I know he has been out on loan in recent seasons, and be part of the squad."

Kepa an Abraham injury updates

Lampard is hoping to have both Tammy Abraham and Kepa Arrizabalaga back for Chelsea's next pre-season match against Barcelona.

Neither featured against Kawasaki Frontale after picking up illnesses, however the Blues have another game on Tuesday when they take on the La Liga champions in Saitama.

"The illnesses aren't related. Tammy Abraham has tonsillitis and Kepa reported a stomach bug this afternoon," Lampard said.

"I'm not a doctor but I think it comes alongside what I mentioned before about flying in, a lot of players aren't sleeping and are finding it difficult in different ways and it's come out in those two players.

"I don't expect either of them to be too long. Tammy's on the mend already and hopefully both will be in contention for Barcelona next week."
