Chelsea news: Pundit stuns fans with prediction as Villa have injury fears over Blues loanee

Chelsea are still waiting to play in matchweek 35 in the Premier League, with the Blues not in action until tomorrow (Monday) when Burnley visit Stamford Bridge.

But as attention turns from Europe to the Premier League after the Blues' win against Slavia Prague in midweek, the battle for the top four in the Premier League comes back into focus.

And with Tottenham losing yesterday (Saturday) against Manchester City, the door has opened for Chelsea to move back into the top four with a win against Burnley.

However, the Blues will be waiting to see how Arsenal and Manchester United fare, with Chelsea's other top four rivals both in action this afternoon.

Below, we take a look at the latest Chelsea news ahead of the game.

Pundit's surprising prediction

Blues boss Maurizio Sarri has been a man under pressure in recent weeks, with some Chelsea fans unhappy at his tactics and the lack of game time given to promising teenager Callum Hudson-Odoi.

But amid continued speculation over the Italian's future in west London, Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has made a surprising prediction about who the next Chelsea boss could be.

Speaking on Soccer Saturday, Merson said: "If Roman Abramovich is still there next year and he hasn't sold the club, Eddie Howe could be the next manager of Chelsea.

Asked how he thinks Blues fans would take Howe's appointment, Merson said: "I think great.

"He plays an expansive game of football. Chelsea fans want to see action and I know the owner doesn't go as much now but he also wants to see action.

"Sarri was brought in to play the Napoli way. Score lots of goals and play gung-ho football. It was never going to happen but Howe plays that way. He opens the game up a lot better than Chelsea do."

Fixture change

As a result of Chelsea's progression to the semi-finals of the Europa League, there is now a new date for the Blues' game against Watford.

The game, which is Chelsea's penultimate Premier League fixture of the season, was originally due to take place on Saturday, May 4, but it has now been switched to Sunday, May 5, with the game now kicking off at 2pm.

The match will be Chelsea's final home game at Stamford Bridge in the top flight this season.

Injury blow for Chelsea loanee

Tammy Abraham has impressed while on loan with Aston Villa so far this season, scoring 25 goals for the Championship side.

But the Chelsea loanee was forced off after scoring his side’s second goal against relegation-threatened Bolton Wanderers on Friday and he is expected to be sidelined for Monday’s clash with Millwall.

Aston Villa will also be fearful that Abraham could miss further matches in their chase for a return to the Premier League - and potentially the play-offs.

Villa boss Dean Smith spoke about the blow following the match. He said: "It’s too early to diagnose it but I don’t expect him to be fit for Monday.
