Chelsea news: Mason Mount's Wembley heartbreak as Thomas Tuchel talks Blues pride

Chelsea suffered more Wembley heartbreak at the hands of Liverpool on Saturday, this time in the FA Cup final.

Just as was the case in the League Cup final, the Blues were beaten on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes were played out. This time, Mason Mount was the man who missed the decisive kick from the spot, with Greek full-back Kostas Tsimikas winning the trophy for Liverpool.

The loss is a blow for manager Thomas Tuchel and his players, who will now seek to consolidate third place in the Premier League in their final two fixtures.

Mirror Sport has your latest Chelsea headlines, as the team again came up just short on spot kicks after an even final.

Mount penalty heartbreak

In a season where so many Chelsea players have been inconsistent, Mount has been one of the shining lights. So it felt harsh for the Blues academy star to be the man who missed from the spot.

The defeat also extends Mount's unwanted winless run in Wembley finals for Chelsea, England and during his loan at Derby County. Saturday was his sixth final at the stadium and his sixth defeat.

Mount was consoled by his team-mates after the final kick was scored and opposition skipper Jordan Henderson showed a touch of class to speak to him too.

Regardless of his missed penalty, the 23-year-old can reflect on a fine campaign, notching 13 goals and 16 assists in all competitions.

Tuchel 'proud' of Chelsea players

Despite the defeat, Tuchel said after the game that the performance from his players left him feeling "proud".

Although Chelsea have been hit and miss this season, in both finals against Liverpool they could have easily come out on top had it not been for various fine margins going against them.

In the end, they didn't quite have enough to overcome Jurgen Klopp's juggernaut, but Tuchel thinks they can take some comfort from their showings in both games.

"We played 240 minutes of final team against maybe the most dangerous attacking team in the world and it's 0-0," he said. "We lose on penalties and we are disappointed and sad, but at the same time proud because we showed everything that we need.

"I was sure during the match the momentum was on our side but unfortunately I was not right."

Lukaku wastes big chance

With no Kai Havertz available to Chelsea, Tuchel made the decision to go with an orthodox centre-forward at the point of the attack in Romelu Lukaku.

While the Belgian has shown some signs of life in recent outings, coming up against a mean Liverpool back line was always going to be a big test. Sadly for Lukaku, it was one he did not look up to.

The striker snatched at a chance towards the end of the first half and did little in terms of link play when Chelsea sought to spring forward on the break.

"Lukaku touched the ball 15 times," wrote Paul Brown. "And it's not like his team-mates weren't looking for him. Reece James in particular looked to play him an early ball whenever he could. It just isn't working for Lukaku, who's agent showed spectacularly bad timing by giving an interview this week asking for talks with the new owner. Those shouldn't take long."
