Chelsea news: Kovacic boost, Kante theory, Lampard's warning and five January transfer targets

Chelsea's final game of the decade is against Arsenal tomorrow afternoon.

The Blues travel to the Emirates Stadium on the back of yet another disappointing result at home in the Premier League as they were beaten 2-0 by a struggling Southampton side on Boxing Day.

Having lost three of their last five games at Stamford Bridge across all competitions, it could be a blessing in disguise for Frank Lampard's side that they are away from home on Sunday.

After all they did taste victory the last time they made the short trip to north London.

And with Tottenham Hotspur in action against Norwich City this evening, the Blues could kick off at the Emirates Stadium below Jose Mourinho's side in the table if results go against them.

There will be plenty of build up to the clash and with that said, here's all the news from around Stamford Bridge over the past 24 hours.

Kovacic boost

Chelsea's hopes of starting 2020 as the capital's leading side has been boosted with news of Mateo Kovacic being back in contention to face the Gunners.

The Croatia international missed the Saints game through suspension after picking up his fifth booking of the Premier League season four days earlier at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

In his absence, Jorginho was recalled and partnered N'Golo Kante in the engine room.

With that said, it's by no means a guarantee that Kovacic will start in north London.

This is because Lampard has opted for a 3-4-3 formation in each of the last two games which has meant there's only room for two central midfielders.

Kante theory

Is the reason for Chelsea's slump down to a decision Frank Lampard has made?

Well, @Arrizabaelaga on Twitter has pointed out that the Blues' dip in form has coincided with N'Golo Kante's return from injury which prompted Lampard to break up the Mateo Kovacic-Jorginho midfield partnership.

In the 10 games since the Frenchman has been back in the side, Chelsea have won just four times.

Coincidence or does this Chelsea fan make a good point?

Lampard warning

Frank Lampard was left frustrated once again as his side fell to a 2-0 defeat at home to Southampton.

It could have conceivably been more for Ralph Hasenhuttl's side, who attacked the Blues effectively on the counterattack, while the hosts didn’t do enough to get themselves back in the game.

And Lampard concedes his team need to learn

"It's a similar story, it felt the same as recent games," Lampard told Amazon Prime. "You have to credit Southampton for that, they were organised and they got their goals on the counter.

"But we need to be better at breaking teams down, simple as that. We need to do more."

January transfer targets

Chelsea supporters remain unconvinced by Emerson Palmieri and Marcos Alonso and wish to see the Blues spend money on a new left-back in the January transfer window.

football.london asked supporters what they wanted to see from their team in the January transfer window and they responded with a number of suggestions to replace Alonso and Emerson in the new year.

The full list of left-backs in their sights can be found right here.
