Chelsea news: Klopp's comments on Blues, Lampard's message for Abraham, Zola's Man City verdict

It was European heartache for Chelsea last night (Wednesday) as they lost out on penalties against Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup in Istanbul.

Despite taking the lead through Olivier Giroud in the first half at the Vodafone Arena, the Blues were pegged back early in the second half as Sadio Mane netted soon after the restart for the Reds.

Mane then put Liverpool in front early on in extra time, before Jorginho coolly netted from the spot after Adrian was adjudged to have fouled Tammy Abraham in the box.

That sent the game to a penalty shootout, where the tables were turned as the former West Ham goalkeeper saved Chelsea's crucial fifth spot kick from Abraham as Liverpool claimed the victory, winning 5-4 on penalties.

But what was the fallout from the game? And what did the two managers make of it all? We take a look below.

Klopp's praise for the Blues

It was a close-fought contest in Istanbul, and that was not lost on Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds boss spoke of his delight at claiming the win, while also praising Chelsea for their efforts, three days after the Blues had suffered a 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford against Manchester United.

"It feels big, to be honest. It was a very difficult game for both teams and it’s about winning it at the end, so all good," he said, speaking to BT Sport after the game.

"We showed character, Chelsea showed character as well so it was like boxing. Proper knocks from both sides.

"I think that nobody in the stadium wanted twice fifteen minutes [at the end]. I think the last 15 minutes was really a killer. But that’s how it is. We came through. I’m not sure about the penalty. That’s it.

"A really good Chelsea side. We had good moments. We started well, then we dropped too deep. We couldn’t hold our football. It made no sense. But it’s really early in the season. It was already our third competitive game without a pre-season. So, we have to fight."

Here's what Klopp also had to say about Kepa Arrizabalaga's superb double save to deny Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

Frank Lampard's message for Tammy Abraham

It was a moment to forget for the young striker as Abraham missed the crucial penalty in the shootout against Liverpool.

The England international's spot kick down the middle was saved by former West Ham goalkeeper Adrian, who denied the 21-year-old with his feet as Liverpool claimed the win.

But the Blues' head coach did not blame Abraham after the defeat, adding that he and the rest of the team would support the forward over his miss.

"I told him not to worry," said Lampard.

"The fact that he is confident enough to stand up and want to take a fifth penalty. I have been there, missed penalties. Anyone can.

"I want the confidence of a young player to stand up and want to do that. I said not to worry. He will come back stronger. It is part and parcel of being a player in the top level, which Tammy now is. These moments come.

"We have to be very supportive of him. His team-mates were, I certainly am. That is football.”

Gianfranco Zola's reaction to Man City punishment

Gianfranco Zola has echoed the sentiment of many supporters, as he shared his belief that the punishment handed to Manchester City by FIFA was unfair on the Blues.

Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard was unable to sign new players this summer and the situation will be the same in January, as the Blues were issued with a two window transfer ban.

However, despite admitting to similar infringements regarding the signing of players under the age of 16, the Premier League champions were only issued with a fine by world football's governing body.

That angered some Chelsea fans, who felt their club had been hard done by, and Zola has backed that stance.

"Considering the other sentence with Manchester City, I think definitely yes, they have been treated unfairly,” he told BeIN Sports.

The Italian, who was assistant manager to Maurizio Sarri last season at Chelsea, has also given his verdict on Lampard as head coach, with the Blues legend delivering a message for the club's hierarchy.
