Chelsea news: January transfer decision, Hudson-Odoi return, potential departures

Chelsea have been on a roll so far under Frank Lampard and, following a recent dip, victory over Jose Mourinho's Tottenham last time out has provided a much-needed boost.

The Blues now set their sights on victory against a struggling Southampton side, with three points the ideal late Christmas present for Lampard's team.

However, a lot of focus will be placed upon next month's transfer window - where Lampard is presented with his first opportunity to secure new additions.

So, what's been going on at Chelsea? Here's all your latest news for Boxing Day morning.

Chelsea: A look back at 2019

January transfer decision

The supporters have spoken and 72.% of them want Frank Lampard to secure the addition of a new left-back during the January transfer window.

A poll held by Football.London saw thousands respond, with fans also identifying their wish for a new right winger, a centre-back and a striker.

Their proposed solutions saw a number of names mentioned, including Leicester City's Ben Chilwell and Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho.

Three tipped to leave

While all the talk surrounding the January transfer window will be around incoming deals, there is also the likelihood of departures being witnessed at Stamford Bridge.

Olivier Giroud, Michy Batshuayi and Pedro are among those tipped with an exit during the mid-season window, as the trio look to secure more regular playing opportunities.

That would leave Chelsea with some holes in their squad to fill, particularly through the middle as it would leave Tammy Abraham as their only recognised striker.

Hudson-Odoi return

Chelsea will be expected to take all three points from their Boxing Day hosting of Southampton and fans also want to see Callum Hudson-Odoi return to the side.

Following an impressive win against Spurs that saw Chelsea play with three at the back, the Blues are likely to return to a more familiar four-man defensive line against the Saints.

However, fans also want to see changes in the final third and would like to see Hudson-Odoi selected ahead of Christian Pulisic.
