Chelsea news: Huge injury boost, Kovacic surprise, vice-captain announcement and Lampard award

It has been a fantastic week for Chelsea and Frank Lampard.

Three wins in a row, one clean sheet, youth getting a chance, senior England call-ups and the treatment room at the Cobham training ground starting to clear up slowly but surely.

After beating Grimsby Town as well as Brighton and Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge, the Blues got off the mark in the Champions League with an impressive 2-1 win over Lille away from home.

They don't have much longer to celebrate that win as Premier League action is back this weekend and Southampton stand in the way of four straight wins across all competitions.

It's the final game before the international break and Lampard's side could end the afternoon in the top four if results from elsewhere go in their favour.

With that said, here's all the news from around Stamford Bridge over the past 24 hours.

Kante injury boost

Lampard is set to make a late decision on Kante ahead of the game against the Saints.

The Frenchman has suffered with injuries this season but played the full 90 minutes against Lille on Wednesday night and came through it unscathed so could play two games in a week.

"That's something we will have to watch over the next 24 or 48 hours to make sure he is still on a semi-recovery as they all are from the trip to Lille and the game," Lampard said during his pre-Southampton press conference on Friday afternoon. "The fact he hasn’t played much obviously.

"In terms of the injury, he is fine. There is no fall out from that from the game. It is just making sure he is fit and ready and that’s a call for myself."

Kovacic surprise

There have been some standout performers during Chelsea's first seven games of the new Premier League season.

Most notably Jorginho, Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori - who has earned a call-up to the senior England squad - and current leading scorer Tammy Abraham.

However, none of the quartet are Chelsea's best player so far this season.

Southampton v Chelsea: Frank Lampard press conference

New vice-captain

Frank Lampard has revealed that Jorginho is the new Chelsea vice-captain.

"Yes, Jorginho is vice-captain as it stands," Lampard confirmed during his pre-Southampton press conference. "Azpi is the captain and that was clear at the start of the season and I think his professionalism and career here speaks for itself.

"Jorginho, I keep talking about him, is a character and a driver. It is very evident to see on the pitch.

"That's the situation as it stands."

Lampard nomination

The Chelsea head coach has been nominated for the Premier League manager of the month award.

It was a good month of September for Lampard as his side recorded wins over Wolves as well as Brighton and Hove Albion, with the home defeat against Liverpool being the only blot.

He is up against Jurgen Klopp, Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe and Leicester City's Brendan Rodgers for the award.
