Chelsea news: Graham Potter handed Jose Mourinho challenge as ex-Blue branded 'top flop'

Chelsea got off the mark for their first win under Graham Potter on Saturday thanks to Conor Gallagher's late strike against his old club Crystal Palace.

The Blues looked like they would have to settle for a point until Gallagher's last-minute winner, which boosts Potter's start to life in the hot-seat ahead of a big week. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also grabbed his first Chelsea goal while Reece James kept Palace dangerman Wilfried Zaha quiet - with their battle seemingly continuing off the field.

Chelsea will now look to kick on from here, and a club legend has nnow thrown down the gauntlet to Potter, while it's not all good news for former Blues stars. Here Mirror Football has rounded up the latest Chelsea news.

Potter handed Mourinho challenge

Former Chelsea captain John Terry has challenged Graham Potter to channel his inner Jose Mourinho and lead the club to glory, just like his old boss.

Terry skippered Mourinho's side to a number of major honours during their time together at the club in a trophy-laden era. Now he has backed Potter to make a similar impact at Stamford Bridge, providing he can get the dressing room on side from the outset.

Speaking on Bein Sports, Terry said: "Pretty much like we did when Mourinho came in. No one had really heard of him and then he comes in and goes 'I'm in charge'. If [Potter] has done a similar thing, both on the pitch and off the pitch, the players will respect that."

Reece James put in a stellar showing at Selhurst Park on Saturday to frustrate Palace talisman Wilfried Zaha so much that he switched flanks.

The England international kept the Ivorian winger at bay and was clearly pleased with his efforts, posting an image of him winning the ball off Zaha to social media after the game, accompanied by padlock emoji, suggesting he had his opponent 'on lock' or under control.

However, Zaha was seemingly quick to respond on Instagram, before hastily deleting his post.

Barkley named 'top flop' on nightmare debut

Ross Barkley tries in vain to keep tabs on Neymar (Getty Images)

Ross Barkley's time in France is already off to a bad start as he endured a nightmare debut for new club Nice.

The former Chelsea midfielder was selected to start for the first time against the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar and co in the Ligue1 clash with Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday.

But for Barkley, it couldn't have gone much worse, as he scored a lowly 3/10 in the ratings by ruthless French publication L'Equipe, who branded him the 'flop' of the match along with a particularly brutal assessment of his contribution during the 2-1 defeat.
