Chelsea news: Fallout from Salzburg win, Abramovich's message to Pulisic, Lampard's 3 problems

Not long now until Frank Lampard takes charge of his first competitive game as Chelsea head coach.

The Blues face Borussia Monchengladbach in their final pre-season friendly on Saturday afternoon and then it's on to Old Trafford and a mouth-watering Premier League opener against Manchester United on August 11.

With that said, here's the news emerging from Stamford Bridge over the last 24 hours.

Player ratings

In their penultimate pre-season fixture, the Blues came away with a 5-3 victory against Austrian side RB Salzburg in what was an entertaining game.

A brace from Christian Pulisic, as well as goals from Ross Barkley, Pedro and Michy Batshuayi were enough to secure the win.

Here's how we rated the Blues.

Winners and losers

Attacking wise, Lampard would have been impressed with what he saw against Salzburg. On the flip side there will be concerns about conceding three for a second game running.

The match did allow the Blues head coach to assess which players will be of use heading into the new season.

Read here as football.london takes a look at who would have caught Lampard's eye as well as those who need to improve.

Pulisic meets Abramovich

Blues owner Roman Abramovich made a rare appearance in Austria on Wednesday evening.

And he would have been impressed with the player he splashed almost £60m on in January as Pulisic's brace was one of the main talking points from the eight-goal thriller.

Speaking after the game, Pulisic revealed what the Blues owner said to him.

"It wasn’t what I was thinking about," Pulisic said. "It’s great, he said hello to us after and it was a good night. He said ‘welcome to the club’, just being nice.

"It was a big relief to score my first goals for Chelsea. A great win and to do it in that manner and it felt great adapting to the new team."

Lampard's three main problems

Make no mistake about it, Lampard's first competitive game as Chelsea head coach is certainly a tough baptism of fire.

Facing Manchester United away from home is massive test and one that the Blues legend will be keen to get off to a fine start in.

Although, he does have some problems to solve before visiting the 'Theatre of Dreams'.
