Chelsea news: FA Cup 5th round draw, £12m transfer, Piatek update, massive injury boost

Chelsea got back to winning ways at the weekend as they overcame Hull City in the FA Cup with Michy Batshuayi and Fikayo Tomori both on the scorehsheet at the KCOM Stadium.

Their reward is a fifth round tie against the winners of the Shrewsbury Town/Liverpool replay following the draw which was made last night.

That tie is slated to take place in early March as for the first time ever fifth round ties have been switched to the midweek slot because of the Premier League's inaugural winter break.

Frank Lampard on Michy Batshuayi

As well as preparing for the big game at the King Power Stadium, there will be one eye on transfers. Deadline day is fast approaching and Chelsea are yet to make a signing despite links to the likes of Jadon Sancho, Ben Chilwell and Wilfried Zaha.

But all signs are pointing towards in being an exciting final week of January for the Blues and head coach Frank Lampard.

With that said, here's all the news from around Stamford Bridge over the past 24 hours.

Atletico Madrid increase Edinson Cavani offer

The good news for the Chelsea is that Edinson Cavani won't be heading to Manchester United, but the bad news is that The Athletic are claiming that the Uruguayan prefers a move to La Liga.

And he could become an Atletico Madrid player in the coming days.

According to RMC Sport, via Get Football News France, the La Liga outfit - who were held to a goalless draw by Leganes on Sunday - were to launch a second bid for Cavani on Monday.

Furthermore, the report states that Atletico will increase their original offer of €10m (£8.4m) by €5m (£4.2m) which means the second bid will be in the region of €15m (£12m).

Although, PSG are said to be holding out for €25m (£21m), as that would enable them to comply with FFP regulation rules.

With that said, it's understood that Madrid are confident their improved bid will be enough to convince PSG thus handing a blow to Chelsea in their search for a new forward with deadline day fast approaching.

Leicester injury boost

Leicester City's top scorer Jamie Vardy will be fit to face Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.

The 33-year-old came off early in last Wednesday's 4-1 win at home to West Ham United with a suspected hamstring issue but initial fears of a lengthy layoff were immediately ruled out.

In fact, Vardy is set for a swift return to action as he's in the Foxes squad which faces Aston Villa in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at Villa Park which means he should be OK for the Blues game.

"He's in the squad," Rodgers said at his press conference ahead of the semi-final. "He's worked very hard since his injury last midweek.

"He's in the squad and then we'll give it another full day, see how he is tomorrow, and see whether he starts or comes off the bench. But he'll certainly have a part to play."

Chelsea transfer news

As mentioned above, transfer deadline day is the 31st of the month and the Blues could be busy over the next three days.

Lampard has already confirmed his intentions to sign a forward in a bid to ease the pressure on Tammy Abraham and it's no surprise that links to a new centre forward have dominated the gossip columns in recent days.

The latest name is that of AC Milan's Krzysztof Piatek.

Following the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic to the San Siro at the beginning of the month, the Poland international has dropped down the pecking order and La Gazzetta dello Sport, claimed the Blues are considering a move.

And amid talk that the striker's agents had offered him to Chelsea, football.london understands that there hasn't been a connection with Piatek just yet.

Kovacic warning

Regardless if Chelsea bring in a new forward before Friday, being ruthless in front of goal is key to their chances of sealing a top four spot ahead of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Reflecting on the win against Hull City, midfielder Mateo Kovacic echoed Lampard's thoughts that the team must improve in front of goal.

"It was a tough game, as we knew that it would be, but we need to score in the first half two more goals," Kovacic told the Chelsea website.

"That's our problem in this moment but obviously we’re happy to go through.

"It was because we didn’t score on time - we had some chances and we didn’t use them. In training, we are working on it but we are still a young team, a new team, and we need to improve a lot.

"We need to take our chances, which in this moment we are not doing great, but we have time to improve and I am sure we will do."
