Chelsea news: Double injury boost ahead of Man United, backroom changes, wonderkid signs deal

In eight days, Frank Lampard will take charge of his first competitive game as Chelsea head coach.

But before that, the Blues face Borussia Monchengladbach in their final pre-season friendly on this afternoon and then it's on to Old Trafford and a mouth-watering Premier League opener against Manchester United next week.

With that said, here's the news emerging from Stamford Bridge over the last 24 hours.

Rudiger injury boost

Antonio Rudiger has been sidelined with a meniscus injury, ironically since the corresponding fixture at Old Trafford towards the end of last season.

He has been doing some light running outside at the training ground all summer and wasn't expected to play much part of the pre-season campaign.

Rudiger won't be taking to the field at the 'Theatre of Dreams' a week on Sunday, but the German international appears to be closing in on a return to full training.

"Always focused on progress," he tweeted.

"Taking another big step next week: training with the team again."

Kante update

It's very much a double injury boost for Lampard ahead of next week's trip to Old Trafford.

N'Golo Kante has now travelled with the squad to Germany for the Blues' last pre-season friendly.

This update as understandably delighted the Chelsea fans.

Backroom staff changes

There has been two changes behind the scenes at Chelsea.

Firstly, Carlo Cudicini is the new Chelsea loan player technical coach, while Claude Makelele has returned to take up a position as a technical mentor to the young players.

Both are relishing these new roles.

...And then heads off on loan.

After signing a new contract with Chelsea to stay with his boyhood club until at least 2022, Conor Gallagher has joined Charlton Athletic on loan for the season.

The 19-year-old midfielder, who was the Blues' academy player of the year last season, has become Lee Bowyer's eighth summer signing of the summer and is looking forward to first-team football.

"I just want to play as much as possible and the opportunity is there to do that here."
