Chelsea news: Billy Gilmour impresses, Mateo Kovacic injury update and Lampard on Liverpool win

Chelsea are into the quarter finals of the FA Cup.

An impressive 2-0 home win against runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool ensured that Frank Lampard's men are into the hat for the draw that takes place tonight (Wednesday).

Goals from Willian and Ross Barkley either side of half-time were enough to see the Blues beat off Jurgen Klopp's men although a first half injury to midfielder Mateo Kovacic did put a slight dampener on the night.

Concentration now turns to a game against the Blue half of Merseyside with Everton the visitors to Stamford Bridge at the weekend.

Here is the latest news from Chelsea over the last 24 hours, including reaction from the win over Liverpool.

Billy Gilmour impresses

Young midfielder Billy Gilmour was given his chance to impress when he was named in the starting 11 against Liverpool by Frank Lampard.

The game was just the 18-year-old's sixth first team appearance in a Chelsea shirt and just his third start, but he took the chance with both hands, being named the man of the match by the BBC.

Chelsea fans showed their appreciation by singing his name in the closing stages of the game, while the Scotsman earned praise from teammate Ross Barkley after the full-time whistle.

Fans also took to social media to hail his performance. Read what they said here.

Pundit Alan Shearer was also full of praise for the midfielder, see what he said here.

Frank Lampard on Liverpool victory

Following the game, Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard spoke to the press in his post-match press conference, where he spoke of his delight at both the performance and reaching the quarter-finals of the competition.

The Blues' boss also talked about a team meeting that took place.

Kovacic and Willian injury updates

The Chelsea boss also gave injury updates on midfielder Mateo Kovacic and forward Willian who were both forced off the field with injuries.

Kovacic was replaced by Mason Mount with just three minutes of the first half to play with the midfielder causing a headache for Lampard should he be unavailable for the weekend's game against Everton.

However, Lampard and delivered some encouraging news on both him and Willian.

“Both have got an Achilles’ issue. Willian hopefully is not too bad, that is what he is reporting there so we will see how he is tomorrow," he said.

"Kovacic’s feels slightly worse. Hopefully not too drastic, so we’ll see.”
