Chelsea news: Ajax star breaks silence on failed £43m transfer as Raheem Sterling disappoints

Your morning Chelsea digest on Sunday, October 30.

Raheem Sterling was 'absolutely terrible' vs Brighton

Former Chelsea star Pat Nevin has slammed Raheem Sterling for an 'absolutely terrible' display during Chelsea's 4-1 defeat to Brighton. The 27-year-old extended his goal drought to six games after failing to net - and impress - at the Amex Stadium.

As quoted by the Metro, Nevin said: "I'm watching Raheem Sterling right now, and I've said that Graham Potter has got the best from every player since he has been there, with one exception. Raheem Sterling.

"If he keeps playing the way he is right now, he's not even a consideration for the World Cup. He is having a really, really bad time, and today he is having an absolutely terrible game."

Edson Alvarez breaks silence on failed Chelsea £43m transfer

According to Calcio Mercato, Manchester United have joined Chelsea in their pursuit of Alvarez. The west London outfit are set to lose N'Golo Kante and Jorginho in the summer due to their contracts expiring, meaning midfield reinforcements are required as Graham Potter looks to put his own marker down on the squad by signing players that fit his style of play.

Following his failed move to Stamford Bridge, in which he attempted to force through by following Antony's example by refusing to report for first-team training in the summer, the Mexican midfielder has now opened up on what happened during deadline day.

Alvarez told ESPN in Holland: "I am very disappointed about it [failed move to Chelsea]. But I am convinced that one day a big club will come.

"We never expected Chelsea to put in another bid at the end of August. It was a difficult situation. Ajax couldn't do anything."

Whether the Blues return with an offer in the January transfer window remains to be seen, but Todd Boehly will face competition for Alvarez's signature from Manchester United.

Reece James refuses to give up on World Cup dream

James is continuing his recovery and rehab, with the 22-year-old hoping to start running again, starting off in a swimming pool, in the next few days. In an interview with The Sun, James said: "I need to keep working hard over the next few weeks and see where I am on call-up day.

"I will try not to rule myself out. It is still slow and in the early stages. I have been in rehab for two weeks, so I am still taking it day by day. The Chelsea medical staff have not given me a percentage of my chance of being back for the World Cup. It is down to how I feel closer to the time and how stable it is.

"It is going to be very tough. It is an injury which could take a long time, and it came at an awkward period, but I am trying my best, and hopefully, it is possible, and if it is not, I know I tried everything."
