Here are the Chelsea morning headlines on Monday, June 29.
Werner defends Champions League decision
Timo Werner played his final Bundesliga game for RB Leipzig on Saturday as the 2019/20 season drew to a close. He signed off with two goals as his side won 2-1 at Augsburg.
However, their season isn’t over as they are still in Europe. Werner will not be part of it though, as he becomes a Chelsea player on July 1 while the Champions League will not be concluded until August, prompting some criticism of the player. He wishes he could play for them, but this is what the clubs agreed.
"Of course it hurts me that I can't help out [RB Leipzig] to play in the Champions League," he told Sportbuzzer.
"But I'm a Chelsea FC player from July 1st and I'm being paid by Chelsea from then on."
Lampard urged to keep Pulisic in the team
Timo Werner isn’t the only player joining Chelsea this summer. Hakim Ziyech will also be playing for the Blues next season, and other top talent including Kai Havertz have been linked too.
Yet despite this influx of new attacking players, Frank Lampard has been urged to keep Christian Pulisic in his team.
The American has been in good form recently, having scored against Aston Villa and Manchester City.
ESPN pundit Shaka Hislop was fulsome in his praise of Pulisic following the Blues’ win over Leicester. "They can't [afford to lose him]," he said.
"The one thing he brings, and brings in abundance, is pace from deep in Chelsea's midfield.”
Blues boss provides injury updates
It’s not all good for Pulisic though as he was substituted during the Leicester match, and had to strap an ice pack to his leg.
Andreas Christensen missed the match entirely, so Frank Lampard gave an update on the two players’ fitness.
"Christian felt a bit of tightness in his calf in the second drinks break so I took him off straight away," he said.
