Mendy’s classy gesture
One of Chelsea’s most important arrivals in this summer’s transfer window was that of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy from Rennes.
The Senegalese shot-stopper helped his new side to victory this midweek as the Blues ran out comfortable victors over his former club.
Mendy has now kept five successive clean sheets since replacing Kepa Arrizabala as the club’s No.1 between the sticks.
As Chelsea-news.co highlight, Mendy went over to all his former team-mates at the end of the match at Stamford Bridge to give them a big hug.
Chelsea fans will be delighted to see that Mendy was a popular figure at Rennes, as it bodes well for his time in west London.
Star demands more despite win
Thiago Silva has called on his Chelsea team-mates to continue improving despite Wednesday’s comfortable victory over Rennes.
The Blues have now won three successive matches and have kept five consecutive clean sheets but the central defender insists there is more to come.
"Rennes are a good team, I told that to my team-mates in the dressing room before the game," Thiago Silva said, as per football.london.
"I have played a lot against this team. Two seasons ago they beat Paris in the final of the French Cup, I was injured but I saw a team who played very well with the ball. They are very well organised and have a coach who likes technical football.
"At the beginning it was very difficult for us. We didn’t keep the ball as well as we normally do at home.
"The red card changed the game a lot. Fortunately for us, and unfortunately for the contest, the red card made it difficult for them, but we deserved the victory.
"It wasn’t a super match but we controlled it. Now we need to continue to work to keep progressing."
Blues dilemma on Rice move
West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice was heavily linked with Chelsea in the summer, and football.london have analysed the key question the Blues must consider ahead of a move.
The piece highlights how Rice won more tackles (89) in the Premier League last season than anyone else while only Manchester United captain Harry Maguire made more interceptions.
However, Chelsea must remember that the role Rice plays at West Ham is very different to the one he would be asked to fulfil at Chelsea.
And given the fact West Ham won’t want to lose him on the cheap, Chelsea must ask themselves whether it’s worth spending tens of millions on Rice when they already have options at the base of midfield.
