Here are the Chelsea morning headlines for Thursday, July 23.
Havertz deal would bring midfielder exit
Chelsea will sell at least one midfielder if and when they complete a deal for Kai Havertz, according to Ian McGarry on the Transfer Window Podcast.
The Blues are in pole position to sign the Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder this summer.
But the addition of the Germany international, who is valued at £72million, would spell the end for at least one Chelsea midfielder.
"Chelsea are confident that should they recruit Havertz that they have enough interest in other midfielders currently at the club that they will be able to sell," transfer expert McGarry said.
"So it will be a case of at least one out and one in, which will make that Marina [Granovskaia] abacus look a lot better with regards to the numbers when the financial results are published."
Chelsea have already completed deals for Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner ahead of next season.
Lampard hijacks Liverpool celebrations
Frank Lampard made an appearance in Sadio Mane’s Instagram video after Liverpool’s victory over Chelsea on Wednesday.
The Blues fell to a 5-3 defeat by the Premier League champions on the night when Liverpool were presented with the trophy.
The home team were in a celebratory mood after their final home game of the season, but Lampard showed plenty of class by congratulating the players who had just beaten his team.
In a video posted by Mane, the Chelsea boss can be seen putting his arm around the Senegal international inside the Liverpool dressing room before saying: “Well done, congratulations”.
Lampard then appeared to wait to pass on a similar message to other Liverpool players before they returned to the pitch to lift the trophy.
Souness criticises Kovacic for display
Graeme Souness hit out at Mateo Kovacic for his role in Georginio Wijnaldum’s goal on Wednesday.
The Liverpool midfielder put the hosts 3-0 up in the first half, smashing a loose ball into the net after Chelsea failed to clear a corner.
Kovacic appeared to duck out of the way of the ball when Andy Robertson sent the set-piece into the box, and Souness was less than impressed.
“Frank will be annoyed. Why is Kovacic ducking? Why doesn’t he just head it out for a corner?” he said on Sky Sports.
“His positioning is wrong. He just needs to head it back where it comes from or out for a corner.”
Chelsea must now avoid defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday to secure a place in the Champions League.
