Chelsea morning headlines as Lampard handed Coutinho warning and Willian deal 'done and dusted'

Here are your Chelsea headlines for the morning of April 11, 2020.

Coutinho warning

Chelsea are one of a number of clubs thought to be chasing Philippe Coutinho this summer.

The Barcelona midfielder, who enjoyed a good time in the Premier League with Liverpool, has struggled i La Liga and has spent this season on loan in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich.

Barca are keen to sell him, with Bayern unlikely to make the loan move permanent, so a return to the Premier League has been mooted with the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal all thought to be interested.

However, a former Blues man has warned Frank Lampard against signing him.

Frank Leboeuf has told ESPN that there would be "question marks" over him arriving at Chelsea.

Leboeuf said: "I would have lots of question marks seeing him come to Chelsea. We have young players, very talented, very promising, we have a good midfield and I don't know where his place would be."

Willian deal

There has been plenty of speculation around the future of Chelsea forward Willian this season.

The Brazilian is in the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge and is able to leave the club on a free at the end of the season.

Moving on looks likely, after a period of contract wrangling between the player and the Blues.

Willian, aged 31, wanted a new three-year contract to stay, with Chelsea only offering a two-year deal, making a move away from west London likely in the coming months.

And Arsenal legend and Chelsea fan Paul Merson believes the move is all tied up.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson said: "Let's not kid ourselves, when this sort of situation crops up usually a player has already agreed a deal with another club. It's already done and dusted. Willian is not sitting and waiting until the end of the season on the chance he's going to fill his boots. That's normally all sorted in January."

Out of contract stars

What happens with clubs' out of contract stars at the end of this season has been a hot topic of conversation.

The current Premier League campaign is expected to go on past the end of June, with the season having been suspended indefinitely as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

That leaves clubs in a sticky situation with regard to players whose contracts end this year.

Chelsea have Willian, Pedro and Olivier Giroud in that boat, and the Mirror report that the Blues could have to end the season without those three players.

Leading sports lawyer Nick De Marco told Sky Sports News: "Legally, they cannot be forced to continue to play for the club.

“Nobody can force them to do so; FIFA, the FA, the club or anybody else. If they want to walk away, that’s a matter for them but it will really be a matter of whether, financially, that makes sense for them.”
