Chelsea morning headlines as key to Havertz deal revealed and defender set for shock exit

Here are your Chelsea morning headlines for Thursday, 9 July.

Havertz can correct long-standing Chelsea error

Chelsea want to sign Kai Havertz this summer, having already completed the acquisitions of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech.

The Bayer Leverkusen star’s talents are undeniable and wide-ranging, having thrived as a playmaker, a wide forward and even at centre-forward in recent times.

The most logical place in the team for Havertz would be as an attacking central midfielder, one of Chelsea’s No.8s in a 4-3-3 - a position Havertz himself has said he favours.

Frank Lampard on Willian's form amid contract uncertainty

And if the Blues manage to complete the deal, he could go some way to finally burying the demons of Chelsea having had Kevin De Bruyne at the club.

The Belgian was not utilised enough at Stamford Bridge and he has since gone on to become one of the world’s best players at Manchester City.

Duo key for any Havertz deal

Reaching an agreement with Leverkusen for their star man will be difficult and expensive, but far from impossible.

Chelsea will also have to convince the player that he is best served by continuing his career at Stamford Bridge.

And according to a report in the Telegraph, there are two Chelsea players who will be key to convincing Havertz to make the move.

The German is set to tell Leverkusen he will not extend his contract, which has two years left to run, and he is said to be interested in joining international team-mates Antonio Rudiger and Timo Werner at the Bridge.

Chelsea’s task of landing Havertz will be made easier if they go on and qualify for the Champions League next season, as they are on course to do.

Spurs confident of Zouma deal

Jose Mourinho will return to old club Chelsea in the hope of snaring one of his former players, according to reports.

Kurt Zouma is on the Spurs boss’ wish list, with the Express suggesting a £25million fee will be required to prise the centre-back away.

Everton are also said to be interested, having had Zouma on loan at Goodison Park previously.

The French defender has just regained his place under Frank Lampard, recently partnering Andreas Christensen at the back, but that may not be enough to guarantee his long-term future at the club.
